308 Clutch Replacement

Has anyone posted or have in their file cabinet a step by step for replacing a clutch in a 85 308. I know there is at least one special wrench I need to buy. Where is a good place to buy the clutch and pressure plate..etc?

At 53,500 mine is starting to slip as I let it out at the stop light, I don't know if it's the original or not..how long do they usually last?

Thank you for the site information, did you replace the "O" rings and all the bearings, and where did you buy all the parts?

o-rings?- yes
bearings?- no, they were fine and quiet, except the throw-out bearing was replaced
ring nut?- yes- this is the lower nut that needs the special socket
main seal?- no, it was dry


I bought the parts from AW Import Auto Parts- I assume they still sell Ferrari parts.
I remember it all costing abot $600, including new gear oil, some sealants, etc.

the special socket (from Baum tools) was a little over $100. Your brother would have one. Use an impact wrench for this.

What are the "O" rings for?

They seal the oil passages between the "cascade of pinions" and the transaxle. Three of them.

Ensure that the ring nut is torqued properly. My clutch had been replaced by a PO,s mechanic (term used loosely) and ring nut was found my me to be little more than finger tight. I don't think he invested in a ring nut socket. Caused damade to clutch shaft and top drop gear splines due to wobble. Expensive mistake but all is well now.

 

Thanks for the tip, Is it a good investment to purchase the set of special sockets from Baum tools? or just the one for the clutch?

Adjust it as it starts slipping...you can get extra life.......sometimes.

The procedure is in the books, you do not have........

 

adjust?, I have some freeplay, should I adjust some of that out?

I have just 700 miles in 11 months, at that rate I probably have years to go.....lol Seriously, I need to get a list going and start buying parts, I would like to drive the car more this summer

Doug 700 miles in 11 months and you live in Fl Lol,should be driven 400 miles a month its summer almost everyday. I put 300-500 on both cars monthly

I drive a jeep wrangler daily (probably my favorite car to drive), and our Yukon on weekends to our weekend lake house.

The 308 has had the battery die 3 times, in the last 7 months, the first time I had to replace the battery. It's a fun car to drive, but if its wet or cold out or going to rain, we don't drive it.

 

If it was me, i'd replace the rear main seal if it ha not been done in a while as you are already there and the seal is inexpensive. Had a rear main seal leak about 18 months ago in the 308 here and once we were in there we did the clutch becuse, well, once you are in there...

 

Does anyone else here think it's kinda funny that Doug is here asking about this when his brother is none other than the one and only Rifledriver??

If you do replace the bearings cross reference the bearing number with Allied Bearing in Las Angeles. They saved me about $400.00 on the whole package.

Actually, I have called Brian a few times with questions, and you are right, he is an outstanding Ferrari resource, like none other, one of few I never question.

My first call went something like this...

Hay Brain, how do you tye down a Ferrari on a car trailer, what's there to tye to?

Brian responded by asking what kind of Ferrari, then I had to fess up and tell him I had just bought one and was going to trailer it home. I wasn't sure how he would take that, he had always told me that they were very expensive to repair. He knows I am cheep

Brian then told me not to use logging chains like I do on my Studebakers, Avanti's and Shelby, to buy ratchet straps and exactly what to tye to. Yea I would have used chains with out his suggestion.

The great fortune from Brian was an extreamly valuable list of things to maintain, watch out for, vendors, lubricants, web sites, places to get on line manuals. Brian saved me a fortune the first week I owned the car, explaining how to fix all the odds and ends that come with a car.

I guess we are even, I use to have to repair his bike.

 

Has anyone installed Norwood's Carbon/Kevlar clutch package? Is it worth the extra $$$?

The QV clutch system is a constant contact system, ie: the throwout bearing is always kept lightly resting on the pressure plate by the clutch pedal return spring which keeps all the slack out of the clutch actuation system.

The advantage is that it makes the clutch very responsive. The disadvantage is that as the clutch disc wears, the clutch pedal rises, and the spring is able to partially release the clutch causing it to slip.

Hence the clutch cables have to be adjusted every few thousand miles to return the pedal to it's normal height, thus relieving some of the pressure from the return spring.

The most comprehensive parts sorce is Ferrari.uk. A couple of years ago the Ferrari factory shipped them 51 TONS of 308 parts, the remaining end of life inventory. If they don't have something, then you'll be lucky to find it anywhere else. In general their prices are a lot better than buying thru a local Ferrari dealer. They're a FerrariChat sponsor, but their online catalog is only accessable via Ferrari's owners club:

You'll have to register with the site. Once youre in the site, keep clicking the 'spare parts' menu items & gadgets until you finally get to ferrari.uk's catalog.

 

Alas, not the Norwood though do have Fchat sponsor Nick Forza lightweight clutch (and lightweight flywheel) package. It is really a near on/off switch and good for 650TQ. Took a bit but find it great for track, ok for road use provided not too much city driving. If you do not plan to add power to the engine i'd say save your $$ and go stock as it easily handles 325TQ, way more than a stock engine.

 

I don't have any plans of modifying the drive train, a stock clutch should be fine. How many inches is the 308 clutch?

Thats why I was very carefull to include the word "clutch" when I asked how big the "clutch"
is.

I do like the idea of a new rear main seal, is that a drop the pan install?

I just need to figure out what a "Newton Pound" is.....lol

 

There is no way to do a 308 clutch on the cheap, except maybe buying cheaper lower quality parts (why would you?) or skipping the resurface of the flywheel.

There are tips to make the job easier and better, but not cheaper.
i.e.-Use some loc-tite on the ring nut, after degreasing the end of the shaft.

I would replace the throw-out bearing (you will need a press) if I had no records of it's replacement.


It IS a tricky proceedure to adjust the clutch; clumsy to get the clutch/pressure plate lined up with the bell housing (heavy); easy to have oil leaks later if the three o-rings are installed/sealed incorrectly and become misaligned, etc.

Clutch replacement was my first big job on my 308. I had done some fairly major work on other makes, but never a Ferrari. That freaked me out, so I did alot of research, talked to some people on this site on the phone, talked to a Ferrari mechanic, and went very slow

 

The problem there is that ring nut should never have been removed.
