For the people on this forum who bought their ferrari's in their twenties or early thirties... did you guys actually pay it off or are you making payments?

when i say pay it off i mean did you give them a certified cheque for the car or what?

There is no point. The OP is an 18 year old kid who hopes to convince his father to spend $100K+ on a high-end car for him. 100% of the posts have told him to take it slow, listen to his father and enjoy what he has, which is more than 99.9% of the other 18 year olds have.

i've never said im not appreciative of what i have and i try not to take anything i have for granted... i just have always wanted a nice car... plus the house that im living in isnt even that nice of a house. i dont live as luxuriously as ppl here are saying... im just wondering if the ppl that are buying the ferrari's pay it off right away or do they take time to pay it... no need to be so harsh. lol

You didn't pay for it !,
    You didn't earn it !,
    You can't appreciate it !
    You wont respect it !,
    You don't deserve it !,
You'll end up killing yourself and probably other people too,
and trashing, thrashing, and bashing an amazing vehicle
that is way out of your league emotionally.
When I see an 18 year old in a high end car it
makes me gag first and then laugh. It's not cool it's embarrassing.
Sorry, grow up a little and let your dreams become a
reality when you can appreciate them.

Before I get a high end car like a porsche im not just going to be one of those stupid kids that drives one... im going to take the proper driving lessons FIRST. i feel if you're gonna have a car like that you better know everything about it and how to use it properly.

Good plan - there are actually some amazing sports cars out there in which to hone your skills. I had a VW GTI in the '80s, but you have more options now. Get a Mini Cooper S - I wish there would have been a $20K+ car that cool when I was learning to drive. And it has 4 seats.

    Ferraritor...here's some great advice.

You want to be successful one day? Rich? Wise?

Start now. Look at your dad, and thank him for the offer. Then explain to him that you want to make it on your own, and earn it. If your father is successful, the very best thing he can provide you is knowledge, and a hunger to succeed. Give him a big hug, and tell him you love him.

Then, get your ass in gear, and do something with your life.

I can only imagine how much more successful I could have been if my folks were rich, and spared me just 10% of the stupid financial mistakes I have made in life. But frankly, if they handed me everything on a platter, I probably wouldn't have had the drive to succeed.

My kids aren't getting a free car when they turn 18. I'll chip in 50% for the car. and 50% for insurance. You drive what you can afford.

You really need to listen to all the good advice everyone here is trying to give you, even though it is obviously not what you want to hear. It doesn't matter how 'nice' the house and car you have been given are. The fact of the matter is you have them, you have them at a far, far earlier age than most, and they were given to you. That is obviously going to attract a fair amount of resentment when you complain that it is not good enough.

Put your Ferrari dreams on hold for a while. Get your education, get a career started, find your niche in life. When you establish yourself and can buy one on your own - either cash outright or responsibly financed - go nuts, and buy as many as your garage space and chequebook can handle.

Until then. Start within your means and abilities. Bullfighter has a good suggestion - the Mini would be a great starter.

Here's a plan that will not only save you and your pop some $ but you can have some fun, hone your driving skills and gain some maturity while doing it and even bring you and your dad together even more. It sounds like he really loves you and wants the best for you.
First forget getting an exotic at this stage of your life, as everyone has stated you're not ready for a variety of reasons.
Second going to driving school is a definite must to get your testosterone in check and learn how to drive safely.
3rd, and this is the cool part, get a used beemer, etc.for your street car for 10 -15 G's and buy a used race car, formula V, Ford or sports car ,etc. for 5-15 G'S.
Now, there's no pretense or ego involved, it's just you and the car, no BS. You'll not only learn how to drive in a safe environment but learn the true limits of not only your car but yourself as well, hone your skills and compete in the real world, plus, give you and your dad a wonderful adventure to share.
Just remember one important thing, leave your racing on the track ,#@*& happens and having the skills to drive only lessens your chance of being in the dirt.
You're a very lucky young man to financially be in your situation.
I was 12 when my dad got me my first go cart. My parents had to scrimp and save to fulfill that dream and I will never forget the sacrifice and love that went into that little red machine thanks to them.
Remember wisdom is the most important thing you may ever acquire and it only comes with time and experience, not money.

You should go into acting, because you fooled me

When I was 18 I wanted a Ferrari, a super model and a mansion too. The only difference was, I went out to earn it and not ***** because my dad was smart enough not to hand it to me.

So much for #1 above...that whole unappreciative thing

You're painting the picture, we're just looking at it

This is not what you should be wondering right now. I'm wondering if you need reading glasses or English classes, because you've not comprehended a single thing that anyone has told you over the last two days.

Apparently we need to be MORE harsh, because you are still not getting the message.

OK, here goes. I came back from Nam and bought a new XKE. I kept it for a year and bought a 1964 Lusso in ratty condition. I rebuilt it and kept it, as a survivor, for thirty years. When My mechanic retired, I sold it to a guy in Sweden. When I bought the Lusso, I was 24 years old. It drove like a truck until the day I sold it. It had no air and no radio. Still, I loved it. I was military and, as I grew in Rank I bought other cars aside from the Lusso. When I sold it I bought a Lotus Esprit. After I retired (COL), I bought a 360. Now I own a 575M. One more shot and I get a 599GTB. Then, I die. Whatever!

If you honestly feel this way (I'm VERY skeptical), you have no business driving a performance automobile at the age of 18.
