LAS VEGAS, NV Sales Tax

A little over a year ago, Nevada passed a law stating that on private used car sales, no sales tax will be charged.

Short answer: no, you will not have to pay sales tax on the car. To register, you need the title, or proof of sale, and proof of insurance.

 

If you are permanent resident the DMV will want you to switch your license over... Its not really enforced though.

 

If you register it in Nevada, you will probaly pay more for insurance than if you register it in California. Auto insurance is high in Vegas.

 

Outside Vegas, Insurance is crazy cheap. NV DMV doesn't provide 1/10 the hassle CA DMV does, either. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

 

I don't know what NV DMV you've been to (nor can I compare it to CA), but when I used to go myself I never got out of there in less than 3 hours.

Fortunately, I discovered the registration services, which I've used for my last several cars. Most charge about $35, and it's well worth it.

Like I said, they charge $35. You should talk to JoAnne first, to see exactly what she needs. I suspect you will have to have her get a temporary permit first. Before actual registration, you'll need a smog test (unless the car is pre-1967) and a VIN inspection (since it's from out of state). The temp permit is needed so you can drive to get those two things. The VIN inspection is done at DMV, but that only takes a few minutes. Then you give her all the paperwork, and she does the rest. She is able to make an appointment with DMV to handle multiple registrations per time, and I think she goes 2 or 3 times a week, depending on her volume.

Last time I was at the DMV to register a car, I was in and out in 5 minutes and it was a busy day. Its good to have friends that work there I guess though.

 

It looks like DMV could get even worse, and not only in Nevada. Fortunately, the new rules are nearly a year and a half off, and there seem to be serious possibilities of repeal.

Oddly, in AZ you are not required to renew your license until age 65.

When I lived in California, my town (Auburn) was just big enough to have its own DMV office where you could make appointments. You could try to walk-in without an appointment, but your registration might take 20 minutes instead of 10!

 

I had heard that about AZ renewal, but the person who told me also said you do need to have a new picture every 10 years or so. I wonder if the new rules would come into play then?

 

I know that its not a new driver's test (personally, I think there should be one every 10 years), but like my license expires in 2009...

 

Yup, new photo every 12 years. We'll see!

 

On the Arizona DL application, there's a place for a residence address and a mailing address, then you check which one you want on your license. My AZ license has a CA address (my mailing address) and expires when I turn 65.

Ummmm....Well crap.

I might be moving to Vegas in about 5-6 weeks and I don't have a birth certificate nor can I get a copy (I was born in a hospital in Warsaw, Poland which is no longer there) am I going to be screwed in '08? I am a U.S. citizen with a U.S. passport.

 

The law doesn't take effect until May, 2008. So if you move here this year, you can get a Nevada license without worrying about it. The license will be good for 4 years before the first renewal, so you won't have a problem until 2011 at the earliest, assuming the rules aren't repealed.

Also, note that since it's a Federal law, it isn't only a problem for Nevada residents, but in any state that requires license renewal.

 

Ahhh.. Didn't see that it was federal(reading F-chat drunk is bad) so I guess things will be interesting in 2011 if they don't repeal this.
