Floor mats..why? Mindless rant

Why put down floor mats? "protect the carpet"? From what? For who? Do you take them up for special occasions when perfect carpet is necessary? Do floor mats cost more than the carpet? Why doesn't the factory put in replaceable pieces of carpet on the floor? Is it important that the next owner of the car have perfect carpet in a used car? If he gets a car with used or worn carpet, can't he just put floor mats over the worn carpet? Who will know? Does he deserve perfect carpet? What's the deal? Isn't it great to have Saturday afternoon to ponder the whys and wherefores of floor mats?

 

"Oh man, look at this old Ferrari-needs paint, major service, new upholstery, but the carpet under the floor mats if PERFECT"!

 

Doesn't your fuel system need attention?

 

Yeah, but I'm distracted by the more important subject of floor mats.

 

'cause they look sooooo cool.

I agree. I have pulled my floor mats and have had them stored in the garage for years. I think they are going on ebay soon.

Actually on my '78 308 the driver's & passenger's carpet is separate from the rest of the car, so they can be replaced. The question here is for how much.

 

The less junk under my feet the better. Some guys have mats on top of mats.

 

When I got my wife's MB E430, the driver's side had carpet, two carpet floor mats, and the rubber all-weather mat on top of it. Worked a lot like the "Italian cruise control" until I got some of those out of there.

 

I've found rubber ones useful during times of heavy snow as they keep the carpets from becoming water logged.

Obviously, you don't really love your car.

I sleep with my floormats. Thought everyone did.

Don't love it? I put them in the trunk - under the trunk mat, to maintain the multi-mat thickness, just in a different area of the car.

 

...or even a relatively newer car.

They look great and work in any classic, as they are the classic mat.

Plugzit! Man, I thought about giving ya a hard time, but just decided to say the obvious:

You use floormats because you can lift them up, with dirt still on them, take them out, beat the dirt out of them, and replace them.

...that, and they lift my feet up just high enough that the top of my left shoe rubs the steering linkage sometimes...

If you loved your floormats you wouldn't get dirty with them.

Guess I won't need rubber floor mats here then ;}

 

The floor mats take the abuse and are cheaper to replace. Allows car to be driven then remove the mats to display a clean carpet, like at a car show. Plus what others said about easy cleaning, absorbing dirt and water, etc.

Geez - if you don't like floor mats, just get a Lotus Elise - no mats & no carpet either!

 

Reminds me of the Gallardo I saw a while back with Auto-zone special "fast-n-furious" floormats..

My wife always gives me a hard time about floormats. I took them out of the Mazda when we bought it, and tossed them on a shelf in the garage. Added a set of the rubber snowproof mats and never looked back.

With the new Lexus.. first purchase.. yeah, snowproof mats.

I must have a floormat fetish.

 

Hmmmmm.....wonder if they make mats for a 348 with mudflap girls on them? I'd sleep with those....have to wash them regularly though.

 

Exactly. When your feet are full of snow and dirt its nice to have them.

 

Sorry for the hijack...but once as a soldier on guard duty, I pondered the origins of guard duty. Did cavemen pull guard duty? If so, was there a Sergeant of the Guard who made up a roster and checked in on the guards to make sure they weren't sleeping? If so, what was the punishment for falling asleep? Guard duty gets pretty boring. Lots of time to ponder things.
