Is your car a 348 or a 355? Shouldn't matter, I think the system is the same.

There is a separate fuse and seperate relay for each of the headlight motors. The easiest check would be to identify these fuses and relays (see the diagram on the lid) and just swap them over and see if the problem switches to the other side.

Have you tried opening the headlight door with the knob on the top of the motor? If you do this, be VERY careful that your fingers are not in the way!! The door can suddenly open while you are twisting the knob, and your fingers will get CRUSHED if they get trapped!

It is also possible for the spot welds on the back of the headlight frame to break loose, and then the door binds on the hood when it tries to open. It's safest to remove the fuse or the relay for the headlight motor in question before attempting to open the headlight with the knob.

Try these things and let us know what you find.

The car is a 355. I suspected a blown fuse at first, but have been too lazy to check it out. I might as well do it now. And where is this knob to which you referred?

Thank you - KUDOS ALL AROUND!

Now....why did his fuse blow out? Was it the proper sized fuse (7.5 amps in a 348)? Is the headlight lifting motor shorting out? Is the linkage binding? Are the spot welds broken and the bucket misaligned? Is the wire shorting to ground? Did he turn on the headlights while someone or something was pushing against the headlight door, or maybe there was snow/ice sticking the headlight door in place? Is there a short in the relay? Hopefully it was just a random occurence, but generally fuses don't just blow on their own.

Edit: Mr. "Intheflesh", your profile isn't completed, but I see that you have been posting in the New England section. Come on, 'fess up....New England, cold, snow, ice....did you turn on your headlights when the car was iced over or covered with snow???? Maybe that's how the fuse blew???
