More Old Photos

I disagree. It clearly is not 275 GTB/C s/n 09063. This appears to be the very same car, s/n 10311, as in post #2071. However, there seems to be some confusion about the histories of both cars: which one came 23rd at the 1969 Daytona 24h?

Also, Sam Posey drove with Pedro, not Ricardo. Ricardo Rodriguez died on 1 November 1962.

This pic clearly shows a 250 TR with the pontoon Scaglietti body.
My guess will be the crash of Alfred Hopf in 1960 with 0742TR.

 

I agree with Aardy, it's the 250 TR s/n 0742 TR at Freiburg-Schauinsland hillclimb when Alfred Hopf lost control of the car and fell down into the trees upside down. It was the october 17th 1960.

Dr. Alfred Hopf was the first owner of Lamborghini Miura 1021 which I now own. I've corresponded with him about the car. He did indicate during those exchanges that he stopped racing due to the injuries in a racing crash. By the looks of it, I presumably it is this crash.

Can you send me a high quality version of this picture for my files?

If you study your starting grid photo from Nassau 1963 closely, you will find a little light colored coupe in the far rear of the grid. If this photo was taken at Nassau in 1963, the little car appears to be Fiat Abarth Berlina 1-liter coupe. If correct, this car was driven by Al Cosentino from upstate New York. If was canary yellow. He drove such a car at both Nassau and Sebring in the under one-liter class in 1963. He rolled it outside the Big Bend at Lime Rock later that year 7 times, end-for-end, repainted it and sold it to an Alfa dealer in Lancaster, PA. I bought it from him in 1968 and raced it very successfully at Marlboro and Summit Point in Maryland and West Virginia, respectively, for three years until SCCA banned Abarth and FAZA from any and all events because of blatant cheaping. I sold it to a young man from Boston and have no idea where it is now. The car had tech stickers from both FIA events on the dashboard, but, up until now, I had never seen photos of it at these events. I was told by Al that he won both events in the under one liter class. Amazing, thanks very much, what a hoot!

great shot, thanks for posting it. Probably taken during Rosier's ownership so the car is likely French Racing Blue in this picture. I believe Rosier died in this car at Monthlery.

Note the size of the massive barrel of the sidedraft Weber on the left of the photo. About the only way to distinguish the Monza's 3-liter tipo 119 motor from the smaller Series II Mondial 2-liter tipo 111 motor from an engine bay shot is from the size of the bellmouths on the Webers and the headers. (The Monza's 58DCOA Webers and the S.II's 40DCOAs are actually the same size on the exterior - only the bellmouths are different sizes). The two motors are otherwise indistinguishable on the exterior. See how the Weber barrel is about the same size as the upper forearm of the mechanic!

 

This is in reference to a series of posts a while back in which this 330 LMB at Bridgehampton in 1063 is referred to as "gold." Are we certain that it is gold, or could it be a condition of the lighting or age of the photo? The site from which it comes calls it "red." Just asking.

It can't be red - look at the colour of the turn indicator. If the car is red then the track side would also have to be be red. That looks like a pretty good colour photo to me.

That is what I was thinking also. Everything else in the photo seems to be true color. I just wanted to be sure before I went on a tangent trying to secure another kit to have a model made for my NART theme.

In regard to the Abarths, wasn't the CP class at that time for 1600 to 2000cc cars?

 

Are scans allowed in this thread? Unfortunately every car that is discussed in the forum of "Vintage" is at least twice as old as I, so I have never had the pleasure photographing these magnificent cars in their period. (I have in recent years, but it's just impossible to capture all the character of the old photos.)

I do however own period books and magazines and a scanner, and would love to be able to contribute to an amazing thread such as this.
