i am going to keep my 911. the car has been super fun and reliable, and i doubt i can replace it with anything as fun for what i was going to sell it for.

my odometer is broken, and the speedo reads really fast, about 15-20 mph and gets worse with speed. i think the car ( its a ROW /German spec car , not USA spec) has a KM sending unit and they just stuck a used MPH speedo in the car when it was brought in years ago.

i know there is a place in California that can fix the speedo for the odometer issue, but i have no clue if there is a separate sending unit in the tranaxle that needs to be replaced for the speedo error.

getting back to my original question, while the car is down to fix the speedo, i would love to send my DME computer off to have the chip redone. i have the high compression euro spec 3.2 with Motronic and a test pipe exhaust. i feel i can get more power with a new box matched to the cars specs. i know for a fact i have a USA spec motronic computer under the drivers seat.

anyone have any recommendations? 911chips.com seems to be a hot topic, but i would love to hear from someone from the boards before i send my box off to be violated!!!

    thanks,

    Michael

You will probably get your best answers at Pelicanparts.com or Rennlist.com . It is my opinion that chips have never done much for non-aspirated cars. Maybe a couple of HP on the high end.

Chips are essentially placebos for non-turbo cars- save your money.

I would think the odometer and speedometer both are driven from the same input, so if you fix one, it should fix the other.

But speaking of saving your money, borrow a portable GPS unit from a friend (a car one, or even one of the little $100 Garmin ones used by hikers and on bicycles), and calibrate your speedo yourself- just mark little pieces of paper with appropriate speeds- say 25, 35, 55, 65, etc., and tape them on your speedometer. Or write on the speedometer glass with a wax pencil.

(Or just buy a cheap GPS and use it for a speedometer...)

BTW, I had a car exactly like yours- '84 gray market car, dark gray or metallic black, but without the spoiler. Unfortunately mine had a white interior that had been dyed black, but the black kept rubbing off--- yuck!

    Hi Michael.......

Based on my extensive Porsche experience I'd say I'd go with Autothority for the chip.......you will notice a difference on your car......more bottom end torque and slightly better economy. Buy a Fabspeed exhauast for about $1,000 at the same time......it'lll really wake it up and sound great !!

Use North Hollywood Speedometer ask for Kevin.....it'll cost you $200 USD to get the speedo re-calibrated. Tell them that you have a Euro car which was imported and they'll set the speedo up correctly. You do not need to do anything else.

Usually I would say a chip, on it's own, doesn't do a lot. But in you case it may very well make a performance difference. The fact that you have a euro spec car with a US spec ecm, may be causing you to leave HP on the table.

    Wise advice from kds...

North Hollywood Speedometer is the place to go for Porsche instruments....

As for the chips, go to Rennlist and do a search for Steve Wong chips as that seems to be the chip to have;as an SC owner there is little I can do for my CIS-based system so I have no experience with any of the chips.....you may be wasting your money seeing as your car is euro-spec already-maybe some SSI headers and mufflers are what you need...

Join PCA if you haven't done so already and do some DE events; you'll appreciate your 911 even more....but then you'll be doing suspension mods, brake mods, and you'll soon want a 930. :)

    modded 930s are the bomb....

sending my speedo off today to North Hollywood Speedometer.

i took the DME out and its the early type with the chip soldered in. a Fchatter has offered me a chip for a great price, but i will need to have a socket installed in my DME. i emailed one popular company , and received a quick reply, but they seem to want to sell me a chip too, and implied they will not just install the socket for $50.00 like their website says. i will call and confirm that today by phone.

if anyone knows a company that will install the socket, or has a used DME with the socket installed PLEASE let me know!

    :)

next are some H4 lights!!!!

The recommendations that KDS made are $$$.

Close local friend of mine and fellow PCA member had those mods done to his '86 Carrera and there was a noticable difference.

Good choice to keep the car. I had a '76 911s that I drove in graduate school. I LOVED every minute of it.

yep, i have really fallen for the car, been driving it whenever possible. 308 runs great but i dont drive it near as much as the 911.

i may just reinstall my DME and try to find a spare that has the socket already. that way i can try different chips if i get bored!

Go to the pelican parts BBS and do a search on Steve Wong chips, he makes the best chip upgrades for the 3.2.
