Original Boxers did not have center caps. Knockoff hubs. Only in late 1984 did they switch to the center hex nut.

If it has had wire wheels put on it's probably using this nut.

The other part is a three eared spinner nut. Many of these seem to have been taken off when imported.

Either one runs about $300-500 new.

Not entirely true. In some markets hex heads were required even on Ferrari's(and other cars) much earlier than Boxers. I believe Belgium market cars have required non-winged knockoffs since the 60s. If you look at a Ferrari Parts Manual you can see the markets that required non-winged knock-offs...

The market determined the use of nuts vs spinners.

my car came with hex nuts. I just bought a set of spinners on e bay, as I prefer the look. Is there any way that a judge can tell the car had hex's originally? I guess I could put them back on for a show if necessary.

What you need next is the proper hammer for the tool kit. The owners manual shows spinners even if the car had the hex nuts so Ive seen. Cant see how a judge would ever be able to tell unless they knew the original destination of your particular car so who cares? Go with the spinners, change the mallet in the tool kit and remove the large wrench.

How much did you pay for the spinners and what kind of shape? I need a right spinner due to a peel in the chrome.

Found a tool kit with a mallet, although pretty banged up. Your right on the manual, under wheel removal it says hit the nut wiht a lead hammer, no mention of a wrench. I paid 1,100 for the 4 spinners, haven't seen them yet, supposed to be mint.

My friends 84 has the hex nuts and what he called a smaller hammer than mine along with the wrench you bang away on. Maybe post a pic of the mallet you have, mine is in the boxer buyer thread for reference. If its smaller and you cant post the pic then email me it.

    Good day Paul,

If you are looking for some excellent non factory three-eared spinners, then check on e-bay. I bought four for $560 USD total (for all 4 incl shipping). I believe the fellow is also here on fchat as well. If you wish his name and direct e-mail, send me a PM and I will give it to you. They look almost like the originals except the "Cavallino Rampante" is just slightly different.

If you are looking for Factory NOS octagonal type, then Gentry Lane has them for about $400 US each.

    Cheers,

    Sam

My car has the spinners but there is no mallet in my tool kit. Where do you suppose I could find the correct mallet?

The tires are at coker tire, expensive but available. If I had to buy rims and tires for my BBi I would spend the money on something other than the metric correct TRX wheels. I would buy a set of rims from one of the suppliers in this thread but keep them to a reasonable width and you can run modern rubber while retaining the factory look.

If you end up running the stock metric wheels, I work at Coker and give a discount to FChat members. My number is 1-800-251-6336 ext.256.
