Is it possible to order a Ferrari without the Ferrari insignia (the name "Ferrari") on the back? I doubt that I will ever be in the position to get on a list and order a new Ferrari, but I am making good use of the time I am spending waiting until I can buy a "previously-owned" one to learn what options I want.

I know my personal preference for no shields and no insignia is not very common. For those of you with a bewildered look that are wondering why in the world I would want this, the reason is that I think that 360s and F430s have beautiful lines and that shields and insignia clutter up the lines. I think shields on a 360 or F430 are like a tatoo on a beautiful woman. It looks sexy but it distracts from the stark beauty. They are fine on a race car when the whole car looks like a billboard anyway.

I have seen Porsche Carreras without any insignia at all and I like that look - it is very understated and makes the car even more beautiful in my eyes. An added bonus for me is that those that are truly clueless about cars (and there are many!) won't get tipped off that this is an exclusive Italian sports car and not another new Pontiac or Toyota, which suits me just fine.

I know of two F430s without shields here in the Northwest and they are both stunning cars. The lack of shields really lets the cars' lines make a statement. However, I have yet to see an F-car that is not identified as such with the word "Ferrari" on the back.

You can tell me all about why this is foolish and would be bad for resale, but honestly I don't care. And, yes, I'd still like a prancing horse on the grill.

So, can it be done? Anyone done it? Pics? Thanks.

    Shields belong on race cars.

The nice thing about Ferrari is you can have almost anything for enough money. No badges? I am sure it would be no problem.

    +1

When you're writing the check, you have a lot of freedom to get the car made to your specs (within reason). It sounds like your request would be within reason.

    All very well said.

Here is an illustration of badge and brand inflation:

My 1952 212 Inter: 2 horses (front, steering wheel), 1 name script (back), 1 designer badge (side).

My 1968 330 GTC: 9 horses (front, steering wheel, air grill, 4 wheels, speedometer, rev counter), 1 name script (rear), 1 model script (rear), 2 designer badges (2 sides).

See, by 1968 things were already out of control. I hate to think how many horsies are on a modern Ferrari.

Ferraris speak for themselves, without badges. Your image of tatoos on beautiful women is right on.

    Cheers,

    Julio

Gotta disagree with that. People stare because of how it looks and sounds, they usually aren't close enough to read any badging.

I guess advertising and other logos- Alice, Vodaphone, Marlboro, Shell, etc. are stricly out of the question?

The lack of "Ferrari" on the car might hurt your resale.

My 360 has shields. the only "Ferrari" is on the hood over the engine. You can see the Ferrari 2x on the engine thru the glass. More Ferrari on the inside than the outside.

Nice women come up and say that's a beautiful car. what kind is it? Most guys know. Most women are pretty clueless about cars. they know about shoes and clothes and makeup, etc.

I agree with you about the shields. They look nice on their own, but on most of the road cars they look like bling.

Not sure I agree as much about the chrome lettering on the rear deck - that has a lot of history to it.

Also, with all the superficial and inane branding on modern cars made up by the marketing department ('Acura', 'Lexus'...), you can take some pride in 'Ferrari' being arguably the greatest surname in the history of motorsports. It sounds a bit odd, maybe, but apart from enjoying driving my car I take some satisfaction in reminding the general public of what a legendary, authentic marque is.

How about the prancing horse? I think it's a little work of art on its own. In fact, I love how Ferrari has only the horse on the back of my car, and the script only on top of the deck lid. I've had a number of people walk up to the car (328) and ask whether it was a Ferrari (!), so I believe if you leave the shields off the branding is subtle enough.
