Next Supercar to be AWD? What do you think?

With Ferrari testing the new "insertable 4x4" do you think they will use it in the nexy super car?

Chase is my actual name lol... Ya I've read about it, just wanted to see what people have to say about it being adapted to the next super car.

being a huge Audi Quattro fan...im a huge fan of 4WD...
it would be awesome to have AWD on a supercar....

 

The Murcielago is AWD, as is the Veyron, as is the Porsche 911 Turbo.

The sad thing is that even with AWD, many people still end up in accidents due to their inability to operate the vehicles properly.

 

No thanks... I want a proper driving machine, with a proper RWD system - not this Lamborghini imitation... Do people want V10's also? (well, now i think, they do - F430 replacement V10 rumors :S)

I'm all for AWD in the 612, but I 'd have to agree- the super Ferraris should stay RWD.

If ferrari starts developing this system...0-60 times will drop!!!...no wonder they´ll explore this, if you look at the new subaru WRX STI it has some 300hp but is as fast in the sprint to 60 as a maranello 550!!!...time to get moving with some more grip so we can scape this "chase" untouched...

...although if you think in the added weight and the mechanical loss of power animating the AWD is not "that" sexy of an Idea to improve just for the sprints...it´s a thing of more control and ease of fast driving, THATS what I THINK will be the big bonus...450 lbs/ft torque in the rear at a mere 3000 rpms and a wet curvy road can get very tricky...specially if the Subaru is ROARING ON YOUR TAIL AND BREATHING IN YOUR NECK!!!!

...I´d give it a try...no big fan though.

 

Is there any vetted and verified source for this claim? The picture I saw, in 'support', merely showed a pre-production 612 testing with a space saver spare on the LF.

well alot has to do with them putting 20's in the rear and 19's in the front on AWD cars....it pushes the back end to the front.

 

I don't think Ferrari is worried about 0-60 times--it's after that point that the car really starts to come alive. Besides, the 430 has already laid down times as low as 3.4 seconds, IIRC (Road and Track, I believe). It's quick enough. And I think it's a little ignorant to say that these cars lack control or that they're not easy to drive fast, because that's slightly off the point as well. It takes more skill to put a rear wheel drive car around a corner quickly than it does an AWD car, but there is more reward for it, which is one of the great things about these cars: the feedback they give you. And isn't RWD supposed to be faster around a corner anyway?

 

this might sound really stupid but, arent super ferraris supposed to be F1 inspired? how would they explain an AWD car while F1 is only RWD?

 

...yeah right mate, when the Future car buyer compares the 0-60 sprints and 1/4 mile times and the porsche is just a tenth or two slower for some 70.000 or 90.000 dollars beleive me they care...pppffff Ferrari mystic is supported by the cold numbers too man.And I´m a DIE HARD FAN of Ferrari.

an ignorant argument?...why do you think the veyron hits 0-60 in THAT time and the Enzo in something like 3/4 a second slower...AWD does the trick...regardles of the power output, grip is essential...not only for 0-60 sprint, but for almost EVERYTHING else the car does WITH the engine power.

too bad once you are rewarded by the great turn you had you oversteared and crashed big time...AWD just like electronical nannies are there for a reason, too much torque, not enough grip WILL make you look like a "rookie"...not to mention you are spinning in a 200.000+ bucks car...if it were mine? I´d care not to spin out of control in a damp road while beating on a gallardo AWD...

maybe the "info" you are looking is easier to achieve if while you turn yourself in a "schumi", you can count on some other systems that will help "enjoy" the car better, the interface, the feeling that you are doing it right even if you are just starting to "wake her up"...Ferraris aint perfect, drivers are NOT as skilled as they should, and Ferrari is certainly NOT the easiest car to drive...

If we are talking "honda fast" through a corner you´ll may not need anything but patience...If you are talking "Ferrari fast" through a corner...then you´ll need a lot more than just "feedback".

...I wonder why the Enzo has a traction control mmmhmhmhmh...let me see...great feedback, modern tires, incredible aerodinamics...

GRIP is something you´ll loose pretty easy if you are just "polished" driving that thing...and that is greatly reduced when AWD systems come to play.

I dont like AWD but I can see WHY the idea must be studied and revised...
and I can see WHY it will open markets and convince new owners just like the automatic gearboxes did...I still hate AT though.

 

Wow, where do I start....you really don't seem to see the HUGE advantages of RWD. There IS a reason why a TRUE enthusiast prefers RWD....

 

...the same reasons that saw REAL ENTHUSIAST buy AUTO TRANSMISSIONS on ferrari cars in the past... having a conventional automatic in a 456 gta didnt make ALL Ferrari enthusiasts feel ashamed...but the sales of that particular car happened to rise 60% according to Road&Track...

...I prefer RWD cars too, I prefer manual transmissions, I´m and enthusiast...I just dont get biased by that fact and can see through...AWD might help sales, improve times and security, none of them go against the Ferrari myth

Not a big fan of awd but when you push it fills like all HELL BRAKES LOOSE when you push turbo cars. and the way people keep crashing the enzo because the owners can't control them I think in the near future it could happen maybe not the next supercar but soon after. The FXX project is to see if customers could handle that kind of power for the next supercar but lets face it we all are not the great MS so we need help.

 

The next Ferrari supercar won't be AWD. I think they may go back to turbocharging though.

With the crazy power wars we have on hand right now I wouldn't be surprised. The new supercar will be pushing what... some 800hp? There's a limit to what you can do on street tyres in a RWD. If not this time (we haven't seen any evidence of F developing this for the supercar) then maybe the 2nd next model will... I think its inevitable.
