Not confirmed, but for the love of pete, why?

At some point, either GM or Chrysler is going to have to make a profitable car that people want to buy. A merger of terminally ill and barely hanging on doesn't look too promising...

Even the fast and phallic Viper is going for nearly $30K off sticker. The brand value of Dodge and Chrysler is in the tank - not sure why GM would even want them.

Maddness! One would think GM has enough to worry about at this time, like making a decent car.

They probably look at the branding of Jeep to pay dividends on the deal (plus then they wouldn't have pesky Jeep saying that they stole the grill design for the H2)

I have faith in GM but I am not so sure if this is the wisest move.

I can't see that happening. First, GM lacks the $5+ billion in cash that they'd need to make this purchase. Second, just about everything at Chrysler overlaps something at GM. Third, Chrysler isn't profitable and GM can not afford to take on another liability.

They could be buying it, or buying part of it, or just braking up the company. if Chrysler was not longer around, there would be a lot less competition for GM and they would be able to sell more vehicles. GM would be able to absorb some assets of the Chrysler company, while at the same time they can liquidate other assets.

I think that owning the Chrysler group has hurt Daimler, though I am not sure who's idea it was to set up a meeting on this matter. It is unlikely that it was GM's idea; given their current financial situation. Yet Daimler has to be familiar with GM's situation. All this makes me thing that the plan may be to make the Chrysler group disappear.

Sell half of the Chrysler group to GM, then split the assets, liquidate the rest. Daimler gets a major initial birder off its back, while GM looses a major competitor.

    just my opinion.

Buy it... suck in all the debt and liabilities.... then GM files BK and dumps all the legacy costs (pensions ect.) associated with both companies plus lots of the debt. Streamline the product range, keep the best from both, re-emerge from the BK as perhaps the largest US company and position themselves for Govt. subsidy as such.

    A good long term plan?

MB already got the Mopar engine people --- what else is there?

    ... other than a precedent for a government bail-out.

True, Jeep has some value as a brand. It's squandering some of it with the Compass, but the Grand Cherokee/Liberty/Wrangler seem to be huge sellers.

Problem, is after they mercifully killed off Plymouth, it's still hard to see any value in the Chrysler nameplate -- I just can't think of a car they make right now other than the plush version of the Dodge minivan. The Crossfire died after two years. I guess there's the new Sebring, which had the press excited enough to claim it's better than the old Sebring.

And why is the Viper made by what is essentially a truck division?

I think Chrysler is so far down the toilet that GM should stay away. Of course, GM had the wisdom to get itself entangled in an expensive-to-escape deal with Fiat, so Chrysler might look pretty solid to them right now...

GM shouldnt buy Chrysler. I think GM should just keep doing what they are doing. The new RWD platform looks promising if the Pontiac G8 is any representation of whats coming.

What are the chances Chrylser gets bought by Nissan and their CEO gives them a huge turn around?

I don't know but likly because the first Viper motor was from a Dodge pickup

Chrysler the last seems to have been get better however I think that the image of there car being linked with M-B has taken M-B cars down a bit

I think Hyundai buying Chrysler makes more sense than GM buying Chrysler. This would enable Hyundai to get in on the full size pickup market in the US.

It also gives Hyundai a good network of dealerships. I just don't know how well that would go over with the American market. Hyundai has really improved on quality over the years, but the perception in America still isn't there. I wonder if Chrysler truck sales would suffer (more than they already are) if Hyundai took over?

    Gang,

Reading a GM site and I see a 2007 Chrysler Sebring Advertisement, on it!
The sale may be further along than many think. I included the GM Forum link, on the subject for your reading, we live in interesting times. I hope this is not out of line here on this Forum, but the economic impact to US. and World Economies is important. Here is what others are saying.

If you go to the bottom of the link you posted, you will see a disclaimer that states the following: GMInsidenews.com is not affiliated with General Motors Corp.

The presence of a Chrysler ad on that forum isn't really indicative of a relationship between GM and Chrysler.

It would sure as heck confuse the anti-Toyota NASCAR fans.
