I had not read that before. From my understanding the 430 is a totally new car from the ground up?

No. I believe internally Ferrari named the F430 the "evo". If you go back to the initial press coverage of the car, many articles pointed out that its something like 65% new. I think the hood and parts of the roof are carry overs and I think the basic frame and chassis are improved but not necessarily new.

Bottom line- does this knowledge diminish the F430 for you? It does not at all for me. I like the fact that the car has a good foundation that has been expanded upon. I really like the F430 and can't wait to have one in my garage. :)

    best regards,
    Jerry

Very true and the parts books prove this to be very correct.

And based on the state of the car industry I highly doubt a 2009 model would differ greatly from the 430 mechanically.

Maybe as Jay said the 599 type tranny, and I would expect a higher output 8 rather than a 10. A 10 would tend to make the car a bit large.

    But who really knows?

The Gallardo is shorter and narrower than the 360. It's a 10!

    That is interesting.

Now, do you mean you rate the Gallardo a "10"!

In the abscence of any other official info, I think we have to rely on what Ferrari told the DOT and a brand new model will be out late 2008 which makes the 430 a 4 year model.

One of the reasons I decided to make a 430 my first new Ferrari was that I anticipated (long before the 430 was unveiled) that it would be an updated version of the 360. Ferrari hit a home run with the 360, and I sure don't mind owning an improved version vs an untested, all new model. IMO the 360-430 range willl be very difficult to match let alone top. I'm sure the new car will have more power but frankly, the 430 already has so much that more power alone will not entice me to let go of the 430.

Well said, unless the replacement will be based on the 430 which I think it will. I don't think Ferrari will come up with an entire new car in two years. And I am quite sure it will remain a V8 based on the same 430 engine.

When the 360 came out, Ferrari stated that the design process started 7 years earlier. So somewhere in 1992/1993 the 360 had already been designed. Based on that information the 430s replacement has already been in the build process for around 4 years. The next 2 years will be used for final tweaking an to get the "bugs" out.

    Facelift !!!!
if you said a porsche 997 is a facelift of the 996, i would agree because they really just changed the front and rear lights, not much with the engine
but F430 is a 360 facelift !!! the only thing they didnt change is the challenge wheels that you can still get on the F430, everything else is pretty much NEW or modified

If Ferrari can build a 430 replacement to beat the old GT3 I would be impressed.

A friend of mine who has direct contact inside the factory (he's an engineering consultant) told me that the next step for the F430 is an engine upgrade to 4.5 litres and 520HP.

This strategy is needed to "keep up" with Lamborghini in the horsepower race, and because Maserati is getting a 4.7l V8 (they're all based on the same design) which will get close to 500HP itself, and as you know Ferrari doesn't allow Maseratis to be more powerful...

Whether this car will be called the F450 or F450CS I don't know; however this is the next evolutionary step to expect.

Not really. The reality of the situation is that the only completely new anything in a 430 is the engine, which is based on the Maserati 4.2 liter engine in the the current Mas lineup.
The underlying chassis of the 360 is the basis of the 430 and certainly many of the hidden elements are the same - wiring harnesses, AC compressor, basic transmission unit, suspension, brakes etc etc. many of the standard elements in the 430 were first shown in the Challenge Stradale, which is clearly just an evolution of the basic 360.
Ferrari considers the 430 evolutionary in nature and in fact relied on that linkage to the 360 to petition for a continuing exemption from new airbag regulations.

I think I can say with some confidence that the 430 replacement has already been on the drawing boards for 1-2 years. Ferrari has always been really good at keeping projects under wraps until close to the actual unveiling. But I would bet on a bigger, more powerful V8, especially since F1 now uses them.

At this stage, they would still be using F430 bodied mules, wouldn't they?

that red 430 with the panels missing is still running around the factory

    I saw a 2 door version of the Quattroporte [Duoporte ? :p]
running around in matt black, fake bodywork around the rear window.
    Looked pretty impressive :)

I assumed test mule for the 4200 replacement
...but wouldn't Maserati do that at Modena ?

Maybe its a test mule for the Dino ? :D
    [wishful thinking :(]
