Yesterday my mother left her home for a while with the stove on, she was boiling something & completely forgot about it. I was with her during this time but didn't know she did this, when we got home I smelled smoke & opened the kitchen door only to find the house was filled with smoke. There were flames but only burned the pot & the contents inside. I tried airing out the house but the smell is now all over the home. I think she was very fortunate it didn't spread any further than it did. Now I've to get the smell out the furniture, drapes, carpet, etc...

    Any ideas?

i would recommend fabreeze (sp) always seems to get odors out. if it works in a fraternity house, it should work at a normal house. :)

Send the drapes to the cleaners.
    Have the rugs professionally cleaned.

You will prebably have to repaint the interior.

There's two ways to effectively remove smoke.

Ever wonder how a restoration crew removes smoke from a home that has been partially burned?

    Method 1
Ozone machine. Not to be confused with the Ionic air cleaner(Ionic Breeze by Sharper Image) This method must be used with care, for pure ozone is poisonous to humans. A restoration crew will typically seal a room as airtight as they can get it, run fans to move the air around and switch on an ozone machine and let it run overnight. The next morning, before entering the room, put on a gas-type respirator. Even a surplus gas mask will work. Switch the ozone machine off first, then the fans and open up all the windows to get the ozone out of the house. The result? no smoke odor.
The only caution is this, if any damp cloth or carpet is in the area of during the ozone process, it will bleach the damp area out. Ozone will turn water into hydrogen peroxide.

    Method 2
Smoke fogger teatment. A special restoration solution and a fogger put an ultra fine mist of the solution into the room. The person fogging the room will need a gas mask as well. The fogged product will attach itself to odor and neutralize it. Sealing the room airtight is also required. The fog must take for several hours until the room is clear.
The only warning about fogging is that if the room is fogged too much, cloth items will saturate.
