The current Evo IX does 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and the new Evo X will be lighter and have over 50 more hp...so it should have a 0-60 time in the low 4s...for less than $40k it has to be the sports sedan bargain of the century!

The car would deff be a pocket rocket, only problem is the rice boy image. It would be a good car for the tracks and some serious mount climbs. I myself like the evo 9MR RS

I recall reading (possibly in that same Automobile print mag) that the Evo X would actually be heavier than the current Evo, however the increased power was supposed to the negate the difference.

Still, looks like it should be an even bigger hit than the current car.

No resale value & every 18 year old has one. Hmmmm...

    I'll pass on this opportunity.

Oh yeah, and the slightly used '06 STI (same ballpark of a car) I test drove was horrible! It was like a giant aluminum can - and the drivetrain broke after my test drive. You get what you pay for I guess.

    Go Ferrari!!!

I guess that's the difference between a heavy American "musclecar" and a lightweight Japanese WRC car.

I still like the STI (besides the looks of the new ones), and would probably pick it over the new Evo. However, this new Evo will have paddle shifters and my wife hates to drive manuals so I would consider the new Evo because of that.

    AKA - "Dextron/Mercon remote controls".

I'm amazed when at the dealer how many salesmen say, "paddles shifters, just like a Ferrari!"

    UMMMMMM... way different, pal :(

I initially thought the same thing but I think the fit and finish of this car will be better than the IX. The car also comes with a 10 yr/100k mile powertrain and I think a 5/60 bumper to bumper. I have been thinking of getting an STI for a daily driver/weekend track car but this Evo X really has my interest. The Evo IX and the STI are an absolute blast to drive but the X seems to be more of a visually appealling package. Question is can I wait until next year...

With the question seeming to be Evo vs STI... I'd take the STI in a heartbeat. The appearance of the new Subaru is just leaves me in awe, while the Evo seems to be dumbing down if you ask me. These cars are both basically suped up versions of the base cars, Impreza and Lancer. If this is the final rendition of the Evo, then the Lancer is no longer going to be the eco car we know and don't really care all that much about, but instead it will be a dumbed down version of the Evo. What I always thought was cool about these was because they actually were an evolved form of the base car. Having this turned around kind of takes the magic out of it. The Subaru though, still has that feeling that if you took off the scoops vents and fender flairs you would be left with the car it started life as.

    I like it.

You just have to ignore ricer comparisons and embrace the Rally background. Of course, in the US, most people don't know what rally is. :(

First impressions: ("Honey I shrunk the spoiler") ;)

I hope the aerodynamics still work as well -- maybe the basic body shell isn't as tail happy at speed. But the smaller wing might reduce the "profiling" that the big spoiler gets.

I'd expect it to be heavier than the VIII -- the USDM model EVO8 had ACD and AYC removed, partly to make room for US emissions hardware and a larger fuel tank, but also to improve reliability (when serviced by US dealers who didn't have much performance vehicle experience with Mitsu's previous lineup).

The X looks to be adding a lot of electronics and related hardware back. Of course, switching to an aluminum block will save some weight. I guess they've noted how many VIIIs have had mods added. Maybe they figure the warranty will be moot.

But if they're cranking over 300 ponies out of 2L, they may have to open up the airflow around that hood. The 8 and 9 had pretty large air vents on the hood, the X prototype looks like it might have trouble with gridlock, with smaller air ducts both front and top.

"Paddle shifters". Hmm. I wonder if a sequential dog box will be an option on the MR version.

A dual clutch gearbox with paddle shifting will be an option on all Evo X from what I've read...

For a daily driver that I will put over 100k miles on in 5 years, who cares about resale value...and for an 18 year old to own one he better have parents willing to pay a huge insurance premium...FYI,in high performance cars, light weight, i.e., aluminum is good...in fact, I believe the new Ferraris are made out of the stuff...

I do? An Evo gives you much more car for the money than any Ferrari ever made...
