Will this 78 308 ever run normal again? My installation of BP6ES plugs and re-timing was interrupted. Combine warmed up 308 at 5000rpm, a little too much coolant, a 0.9 bar cap, *maybe* some air at the thermostat bleed screw, and a totally corroded blocked at the cap overflow tube and what do you get? Answer: a lesson on the flammability of ethylene glycol! With the overflow blocked the extra coolant pushed out the cap and onto the exhaust. Not a pleasant way to start the weekend. The crud in that tube is solid and small sharp objects aren't making a dent in it. Anyone else have this happen and manage to salvage the tank? Should I try drilling out the tube? Seamus
Never happen to me but I sugest have the expansion tank clean or boil out, flush the cooling system thoroughly as you could have more solid particles in the systems, and have a good radiator shop flush your rad then use fresh coolant. Check expansion tank CAP
You should be able to drill it out. I have done it before. Becareful, as you dont want to break it off. If you do, a radiator repair shop can weld on a new one. Only trouble is if you try to flush the entire cooling system, if full of large particles of crap, it can become stuck in the thermostat. So make sure you remove the thermostat, before you start flushing if you think there is much crap in the system.
I was able to drill it out. Weren't any other choice then was there? Guess the flames must have addled me . Reminds me I need to order that Halon extinguisher.
Funny I've never seen antifreeze catch on fire. At least not in the last 45 years and I've spilled enough on headers with only the smell boiling off.
