when faced with sony vs canon in digicams....

canon; their IS tech is better, and low-light focusing is better.

sony is pretty bad [comparatively] on both accounts.

For digicams, I tend to think "cam" before "digi".

Sony makes electronics. They tack on a cam.

Canon, Nikon, and Olympus make cams. They tack on electronics.

But that's just a starting point before going to google for specific reviews. :p

IMO Sony and Canon have the best digitalizing, with low noise, great colours and great sharpness.

I think Sony's white balance sucks, but nothing that can't be quickly fixed with PShop.

However I went through 3 Canons (S10, G5 and A40) within 2 years, while my Sony R1 has been flawless.

    I'd get a Sony again.

The latest sony SLR is a great machine. Canon makes nice cameras also though and its hard to go wrong with one of theres. Personally I prefer using rangefinders such as the leica m series. Actually I've even been using leica's SLRs.

I say Canon. I'm just hoping you didn't ask this question in a photo forum. You would have been burned at the stake for mentioning Sony in the same thought as Canon. Had you asked Canon vs Nikon in the same place. there would have been a civil war.

Agreed! I'm at the Camera Shop getting some high quality prints done of some of my pics.. They were good, but it was just me in the right place with all the buttons right. He gets out a Hasselblad catalog. $30K to get started. Let me see, half a new M3 or a Hasselblad for an amatuer.

    Chebby's Rule!

I have Sony's. I had three, I'm never buying a Sony digital still camera again. Their harddrive based HD video camcorder looks appealing though.

I bought a Canon SD900 (or something like that) for my personal use. I LOVE IT.

I have a Casio Exilim and it's the best camera I've ever had... it takes great pics, it's easy to use, and it's slim and looks great. I think it was less that $350 too.
