Why do you have an all-nighter?

  1. I just can't sleep

  2. Stress

  3. Things going on in your life

  4. I work at night, or live half way around the world, what are you talking about?

i figured i'd post this thread, considering i'm having one tonight. why do people have all nighters? is it because of stress? things going on? just can't sleep? for me, tonight, i've had a lot on my mind for the past few days, and it's all catching up to me now. what about everyone else?

(i know there was another thread like this posted before, but i couldn't find it)

I work the dogwatch shift at both my jobs...So if I'm not here, I'm there...I generally only sleep about 5 hours a day. I guess I got used to it because if I sleep for 8, I feel dead tired....

I am the same. Can only handle 5-6 hours sleep daily MAX!! If I sleep for more than that, I feel really sluggish and tired. I have been up since 6am this morning. It is currently 12.05am. Worked 12 hours today and I still dont feel tired yet. Will be here another hour at least, so I can wake up around 7am. On days off now. 5 days off to bludge around doing f*ck all...............:):)

During college there would be nights quite often where we'd be out partying atleast till 5 or 6. Wake up early afternoon and wait to do it again. When I pledged a fraternity, for initiation we were only allowed to sleep a handful of hours over 7 days.

College really screws you up. Im up till at least 3 or 4 on weekdays without drinking. Weekends are totally different. If you dont make an early exit on the night, you are easily up till 5, 6, or 7 then sleep till 3 pm, wake up and start again.

I work a 24 hr shift and have had many nights without any sleep. I guess I can choose the first one. Although its not because I cant sleep its because people wont stop calling 911.

I'm just curious as to if we could add "Studying" to the list of reasons...

College student here, and studying is basically the only reason I'll pull an all-nighter at this point...

Even if I have a lot on my mind, I am still usually able to get a few hours of sleep on those nights... I guess I'm one of those lucky ones in that respect...

Oh, and what SQ said... I volunteer at the towns Rescue Squad, so occasionally I will get very little, to no sleep while I'm there from 6 pm to 6 am for my weekly shift...

The only time I stay up all night is if I absolutely have to, in order to get some work done.

Other than that, I always try to get a full night's sleep. Sleep is incredibly important if you do any kind of job that requires you to think.

After 10 nights of getting 5 hours of sleep per night, you are operating at only 50% of the effectiveness of someone who got 8 hours each night. After 20 nights, 25%. These figures are from a study the US Army commissioned.

that is the only other reason why i can pull an all nighter, and i've pulled tons of them before for big tests coming up.
