I was thinking about great rock from the 80’s and trying to come up with songs that had a “moment.” You know, when an awesome drum beat or opening guitar riff just hit you in the gut. Here are my first thoughts:

Money for Nothing – Dire Straits. When the music builds beyond all reason and Knopfler kicks in that guitar – awesome.

We Will Rock You – Queen. Foot stomping and hand clapping mayhem.

Bohemian Rhapsody – Also Queen. The “moment” was immortalized in Wayne’s World in the AMC Pacer.

In the Air Tonight – Phil Collins. That drum beat half way thru the song. Two sticks per hit. Da-da. Da-da. Da-da. Da-da. Da. Da. Boom. “I can feel it comin’…”

I’m having a hard time coming up with anything today that makes me feel like these songs did. What does it for you?

Seventeen by Winger had a good opening guitar riff, and the outro was kinda cool as well..song was catchy, but terriable.

Round and round by R.A.T.T good guitar work there as well..but again lousy song over all.

Will agree on Dire Straights..wicked song all the way through.

Van Halens Hot for Teacher with break downs in the first second and third sections of the song..."ahh wow man...wait a second...Whadaya think the teacher is gonna look like this year?"

    So many of them..

Today's rock doesn't even compare to that of the '80s! I watched four hours of VH1 Classic's "Metal Mania" show and it's amazing how much better and less generic rock was back then...

Another bad but great song was Loverboys ' Turn me Loose' .. really memorable , yet simple, guitar riff.

Bon Jovi also came up with tons of great songs/riffs that are instantly recognizable

AC/DC ? Just about everything on Back In Black was amazing.

Motely Crue and Poison... tons of unforgetable riffs.

Ah those were the good old days

Power Rock - confusing....are we going Hard, as in Heavy Metal?
    Def Leppard/Winger/White Lion/Dio/Cinderella/Ratt/WhiteSnake/Bulletboys

Or more 'pop' oriented like Asia, Sammy Hagar, Night Ranger, Kim Mitchell, The Tubes, Smithereens, The Knack, Eddie Money, Billy Squier, Power Station, Foreigner....etc.

Yeah, power rock may be somewhat confusing especially if you consider the diversity of 80's music.

I loved that show. I'm only 25, so during the '80's I never really paid that close attention to music. Although I remember being in 2nd or 3rd grade and singing Welcome to the Jungle while walking to class. It still amazes me that I remember that, let alone still love GNR.

I'm more into underground rock for todays music, but still love a lot of 80s rock and the early 90's grunge.

My guilty pleasure for an amazing (to me) intro by a bunch of '80s hair farmers would be Cinderella's Gypsy Road
