I just happened to catch part of this show on TV last night. Have we really reached the point as a society that we ENJOY watching the king of all rednecks prove that the "average American" is a moron?

Apparently by the numbers watching we must have. It's the biggest TV debut in a long time. Although following American Idol is probably the reason.

I watched the show with my 3rd, 5th and 7th grade children and found it quite entertaining. And, FYI, the adult contestants were all college educated with degrees from major universities such as UCLA, ect...the worrisome part is that our schools and universities do such a poor job. And, Jeff Foxworthy is a brilliant comedian with a Computer Engineering degree from GA.Tech...he worked in the mainframe division at IBM before he went into comedy full time.... he is hardly a redneck, although he has made millions playing one in his comic acts. I believe he is a fellow Ferrari owner as well...

Interestingly enough, there appears to be an uproar in the library community about a question asked last night. The question was along the lines of "Fiction books are not assigned numbers in the Dewey Decimal System. True/False." The answer the show gave was False, but librarians are saying it's true..

I thought the lady was pretty undereducated that said she went to the Lie-berry alot when she was in school. Her answer that Mexico has a longer common border with the US than Canada was something nobody should really miss.

That's the message being blatted out to the public at every turn:
you're an idiot, buy what the TV tells you to.

Remember the ad where the woman looks so smug for "fooling" her dog? Or the ad that implies your dog won't like you if you have bad breath? (This is an animal that drinks from the toilet. If he didn't go for your throat when you had him neutered, I don't think a bit of halitosis is going to bother him. :p)

If you want people to believe that a bunch of government bureaucrats can run your life better than you can, you have to attack people's self esteem.

From what I've seen lately, it's working on most people.

I never watch broadcast TV. The commercials would insult the intelligence of Forest Gump.

The advertisers don't want the consumers too smart, the politicians are laying claim to the "stupid" voters, the media doesn't want the public to spot all their errors --- just who is there left with a vested interest in an educated, informed public?

You're taking my post way too literally. Foxworthy is obviously a bright guy, but he made his money by acting like king of the rednecks.

I have a feeling that they hand-pick contestants for that show. I'm sure that each of them must have some decent academic credentials (to flash across the screen) while possessing the intellect of a turnip. I went to college with a lot of people like that!

You could be right...will you be my literary agent? But seriously, if you don't have TIVO or some other brand DVR you don't know what you're missing...you get to watch a program when you want to, without suffering through seemly endless commercials...I almost never watch live TV anymore as I can watch an hour program in around 35 minutes as there is an average of 25 minutes worth of commercials that I get to skip through. Plus, the search ability allows you to find programs you want to watch that you may not even know exist, comes on at the same type as another program you want to watch, comes on during the work day, late at night, while you're out of town, ect...it is really the only way to watch TV...try it, you'll love it!

I watched the premiere and I'll never watch it again, it’s just like Deal or No Deal, they take forever and they dramatize which month Columbus Day is in and then you never get to see how far the contestant gets. It’s a waste of time. Just MHO.

I enjoy the show, but that's my biggest gripe. A number of times, there was only one question between commercials. It's not rocket science.

At least the kept things moving with "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"...

I don't disagree with the thought, it's more the presentation of the thought. You are right, a DVR is fantastic, for all of the reasons that you mentioned.
