Couldn't think of a proper title for this thread, but I was just wondering how many times the average f-car changes hands? Like how many actually buy new, or when you buy used, how many people have owned it before you got your hands on it? not sure how this can be answered, but maybe list your car/model and how many owners it has had [including yourself]?

I don't think you can answer that because a) it really depends on the age of the car, and b) many owners don't really know how many previous owners their cars had.

I really don't know how many owners my 365 2+2 has had, nor do I know how many owners my BB512 has had. In both cases, I know who some of the previous owners were, and some of the history, but not all.

In the case of my 456, I was told it was a two-owner car when I bought it, but I'm pretty sure there was at least one other (very) short-term owner in the mix. And that's on a car with documentation going back to the pre-delivery inspection!

Another question: do dealers count as owners? I think my 456 was actually owned by a dealer in between owners #1 and #2, which is why I have limited info.

    So:

365 2+2: minimum of 5 owners, including myself
BB512: minimum of 7 owners, including myself and counting Amerispec
456: minimum of 4 owners, including myself

Allowing for rounding errors, I would say that every Ferrari was bought new initially... ;)

Not sure there is an answer, or what value it would have. Every car is what it is.

Even if you know, not sure what it matters. I know the full history of my '87, and it had two long-term owners in its history before I bought it. But Sport Auto owner Steve Barney's neighbor owned it for a few months and really didn't do much with it (few miles, few receipts) -- probably just didn't have the Ferrari gene. Before that, another F-Chat'er had it briefly, put a Tubi on it, then traded it on a Boxer, which he sold soon, and now is onto something else -- he's a serial Ferrari acquirer.

The value of all this information is, well ... I don't know.

    If it helps any:

1988 328 GTS, I bought in 2002, I was 4th owner. (came with fresh timing belts, with about 26,000 miles on the car)

2001 360 Modena, I bought in 2004, I was 2nd owner. (came with fresh timing belts, with about 11,000 miles on the car)

    2006 F430 F1, I bought in 2006, I was 1st owner. (everything fresh with 50 delivery miles).

All three were similar in high levels of reliability, low cost of maintenance, increasing levels of fun, etc.
I put about 3000 miles per year on each car.

The 328 was the best deal. 265 hp, targa top, lots of high-revving fun. I paid about $45k for it. Traded it in 2 years later for about what I paid for it. Just oil changes and a new battery were my costs for 2 years time.

I guess it could be inferred that a car with many owners wasn't maintained as well as a car that had the same owner for many years. Obviously not always true, but it stands to reason that a short term owner wouldn't pay the big bucks for a major unless he (or she) could benefit from it in one way or another.

The value will become apparent when you own a Vintage Ferrari with complete records from new.

Risky inference. If a car was owned for 10 years by the first owner, and then passed through two owners in a year, would you say it was well-maintained or not?

    (Correct answer: Don't know.)

Probably so. I admit I'm out of my element in Ferraris prior to the '70s. I'd imagine buying an historic car like a 250 GT has about as much in common with buying a 550 or 512TR as buying a minivan has with a Ducati.

    Thanks Pap.

Yes, I wish I could have kept all three cars along the way.

My 2001 360 Modena was a great car too.
It was a titanium/black car with a 6-speed. (same driveway, same personalized license plate)
    Nice ride for sure.

My 1989 328 was an original owner car and was bought 11/06. Pretty rare it seems, especially a older 328 or 308, to have one owner. Really, true of any car though, especially now.

Your answer is correct, but it seems like a lot of these cars go through 4 or 5 owners over a 6-10 year period. In that case, IMO the answer is "probably not"

In the case of rarer older Ferraris, I'm not sure it matters nearly as much. The cost of a full restoration isn't anywhere near the value of the car

It's nice to know. I like history-- I just found out about the first owner of my 365 2+2, which is sort of interesting.

The long-term ownership question is probably more relevant. My BB512 has had three owners (including myself) since 1990, while my 365 2+2 has had three owners (including myself) since 1980.

And the first owner in that chain, in each case, was the same person!

Both 360 and F430 are bought new. Its really risky to buy a used sports cars because you don't know how the previous owner used it. Its either he used it over the limits of he baby'd the car.

Which is one of the main reasons used car are depreciated from new cars. Besides the higher certainty of repairs being required, the unknowns are somewhat hinted at with prior service records. Most people that don't abuse their car also get the most thorough servicing done. The PPI also can give a good indication of the prior treatment of the car (through compression / clutch wear)...
