Right. It's the only genre' that's been unaffected in the last 20 or so years (aside from Jazz maybe). Seems to always be there, sometimes you'll hear a cheezy hit on the radio, but for the most part it's a huge underground scene. Probably why it survives, instead of taking over, and falling down, it stays steady. Even classical music is taking a hit these days.

It's been the rage in Europe for longer than most people have known it even existed :)

While recent rap music is as a whole bad it is FAR FAR better then the previously mentioned "emo" males who are frighteningly effeminate. Truly products of Ritalin and weakening male persona's.

    My prediction:

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap make a come-back.

Frankly, music has become commoditized to the point that 'new' talent and changes in genre or style almost don't matter. How many hard-core Led Zep listeners, or Lynryd Skynrd fans, really care? They are still listening to the same records they've been playing for 30 years. I agree that the competition with other forms of entertainment has had a serious impact on prerecorded music as an entertainment form- it is used in background for doing other things, not as an entertainment focus itself.

I am not a rap or hip-hop listener but have huge respect for some of the innovators. Like others have said here, popular forms get imitated, get overdone by those with less talent, and eventually lose their edge.

    Unlike Gary Puckett.

I wouldn't be to sure about that. The chart topping albums in terms of sales are becoming mix tape's and soundtracks. In an era where people demand endless variety your music really represents that in abundance. Plus large amounts of money are made with touring acts. What could be more profitable then poorly compensated DJ's remixing top 40 hits at "Raves" sponsored by Pepsi?

Plus for the most part "techno" is the only area where you'll hear something truly NEW once in a while.

That said I remain a fan of classical music. The only music I can buy that isn't rehashed 70's beats.
It doesn't hurt that I have an excellent symphony and probably the finest music hall in my town.

I think House music can have quiet a following. It is basically the more sophisticated club sound. I already hear the hip-hop beats get more hous-ey dance-y etc. Even PDiddy put out a few house records after partying in Ibiza.

I'm agreeing with Remix and company when I say "Techno/trance"(we will call it that) isn't going anywhere. It's way too fragmented to go anywhere. I mean just a quick look at a site i get my streaming from, DI.fm, shows:

trance, vocal trance, techno, chillout, house, hard dance, euro dance, Goa Psy Trance, Hardcore, Lunge, Ambient, Drum n bass, classic electronica, Breaks, and Gabber

as possible sub categories of electronic music. To the biggest fans of any one genre, they would be offended if you called it techno or trance. I don't know the difference between most but I have a friend who can, and it scares me. :( I don't ever see the this type of music getting as big as hip hop or rock or anything though mainly because most of it doesn't have words, and a lot of people need words in their music to relate to it.

That and to the mainstream of this type of music, its timeless, most other genres, you can take someone who isn't a fan of it, ask them to pick a 5-10 year time that the song was made and most could get it relatively accurate. Ask someone who doesnt listen to much "techno trance" to pick when the song was made, and they would have a very hard time. You probably ask anyone who isnt the most hardcore of that genre to pick the time frame of the song and probably couldn't say with confidence unless they were familiar with the song or the artists work.

That's all for now. Time for a job interview.

    It was a publicity stunt:

Music promotion company made sure CNN published the article :) Spreads Kanye's name to households worldwide. Cheap marketing I call it.

I think everyone is tired of that crap. Shoot him, shoot her, shoot his brother, blah, blah...Compton, Bronx, Inglewood, its all been done.

Then came the Bling, Ice, Cristal and big Wheels and big Pimpin...its all been done.

The last big hit was 50 Cent, being shot, being in jail, and having a great album and earning tonnes of respect for his music. But he's been out of the mainstream, like Jay Z, Snoop Dogg and all the other big guys.
Its hard to come up with new gimmicks, because most hip hop images have already been exploited. Puff Daddy (P Diddy) was a huge success and brought alot of entertainment and good music to the industry, but now I think even he is out of ideas, now he's doing collaborations and small projects, nothing really revolutionary.

I think Hip Hop is in a recession, it will still be popular, just not HUGE because so many other forms of music have been biting at its heels(house music, new rock, R&B love songs) and taking away the top charts and $$$ too.

Yes and no. I've had a few radio hits down this way, but those tracks had lots and lots of vocals. They were produced as techno music, but had enough commercial appeal as to "test" better than most of the actual commercial music being released at the time.

    Anyway...

If anything stood half a chance, it would be trance or progressive music. If you look at the bigger commercial successes such as DJ Sammy's "Heaven", it's really in a pop-trance style. That song was a huge hit. I know the label, Robbins, had the loot to get it played on the air. Most do not have the kind of money it takes to push a track to actual airplay. I think there would be a lot more techno played on the radio if that were the case. It takes $$$ to get your song on the air - talent has nothing to do with it anymore.

As far as lack of lyrics, you're correct. The only thing I can think of that didn't have lyrics were Robert Miles' "Children" and Darude's "Sandstorm". Both of those songs were freaking HUGE commercial successes.

Here's one I wish was a radio hit (Pendulum "Slam"). The video deserved to be on MTV imo.

A more recent popular track: BT "Simply Being Loved". It's breaks, the style I produce.

I just wish SOMEBODY would make some good music.

I was a hard core rock-n-roller for years, but it got old. Don't care if I EVER hear another Zeppelin tune again, they've all been worn into the ground. But I also don't remember the last full cd that I learned every song. You remember those CD's, Pink Floyd (pick any one), Steely Dan Aja, any of the Lynard Skynard. (Am I aging myself?)

I bought the Killers first CD because I liked the 2 songs on the radio. Turns out they were the only two songs I liked.

I've developed a liking for some Bluegrass stuff, which surprises the hell out of me, as I'm not country by any stretch.

There are actually Rap songs I like, but none I like enough to buy more than a single off of iTunes.

Anyone have suggestions for new music for Jim?

My manager is 24, and besides being a godsend to our store, he and his roommate are REALLY into the underground music scene. He keeps bringing in and playing bands the public will never hear of (don't ask for names--I'm too stupid to remember any) and they're pretty innovative and cool. But then the other day I was driving home and "Simple Man" came on and I thought "Sh*t, where's the next Skynyrd?" That's why I have a hard time getting excited about today's pop bands that only seem to be writing teeny-bopper TV soundtracks.
