Here's a metal game we discussed several years back in an artificial intelligence class.

If we were both in Paris, and I told you to meet me tomorrow, but did not specify a time and place, and we had no further contact... What time and where would you meet me?

This is not a trick question, just answer naturally.

Edit: An exact time and location is required. "Same place, same time as the previous day" is clever, but skips the "meat" of the experiment.

I saw something like this recently on Dateline or 20/20 or something like that. They took total strangers in N.Y. City and gave them pictures of each other and told them to find each other. Amazingly enough a big percentage did.

    Eifel Tower at noon.

Back in Paris at the same time we met the day before.

Edit: Strangely enough, I was going to say Eifel Tower at noon too..

It's fairly logical. The staple of Paris is the Eiffel tower, and the most common time is noon.

I thought Effel Tower at 10pm or 9am. Reason I say those times is because if I was in France it would be on a vacation. 9am as the beginning of the day. 10pm to meet up to then go hit the night life.

There is one major problem about meeting at the Eifel Tower. It is PACKED with people. You might not even find the other person unless you say precisly where by the tower you should meet. The other person could pass by noon, not find you immidiately and leave afer 15 minutes.

Easy! Extrapolating the experiment, if you had to pick the most obvious precise location... I would say a cluster would form around "directly under the [mathematical] center of the tower's footprint".

Some of the people I referred to originally that met in N.Y. ended up going to the Empire State Building. I forgot the hour, but they met on the observation deck (I think at the top or near)? They didn't have pictures of each other, they just went up to a couple of people that looked like they were looking for other people and asked them if they were part of the news show. Most picked the same place, same time and amazingly enough found each other. Each team was made up of 2 people. There was another team of people on the same show that picked Times Square and also found each other. Pretty amazing.

Without providing any real information about who I was about to meet I would choose the most popular, well known location, i.e. the Eiffel Tower and the time would be 12 noon as it allows the most time to travel to and from the meeting point for both parties in theory. However, where and when I’d actually meet the other person is another matter.

    Does that even make sense?

Why will it allow the most time to travel to and from the meeting point for both parties ??

At 1 PM you would avoid the lunch rush.

No. I'd say the Eiffel Tower at noon. :)

I making assumptions that some transport systems may be used and that some travelling will be required, as is the case for the majority of people in large cities. I came to the conclusion that most cities transport systems become fully active between 7am and 9pm so you have 5 hours before the potential meeting and 9 hours after to travel, don’t forget that we don’t know the duration of the meeting, assuming it takes place, so it may be best to allow more time in the afternoon to travel as well.

It’s late here but that makes sense to me right now :D

    1. Your hotel, 5am (That'll teach you to be vague. ;))

    2. Orly airport, an hour before the flight leaves. :p

    3. Arc de triomphe, 1944. (16 minutes to 8pm) :D

    4. Cafe Jules Verne for lunch. (Preferably without getting shot in the elevator.)
(How many people who said "Eiffel Tower at noon" were thinking of that line from "Company Business"?)
("Is it alarmed?" "Only if you frighten it".)

And the real answer: After you call my cell phone and ask "where the heck are you?", I'll ask you the same and arrange a properly scheduled meeting.
