Today I dropped in my new K&N filter (thanks Ricambi). I took the beast out to enjoy the extra Kick... but there was none. I even had an M3 rev at me, so I raced him & lost.

What gives? Normally I'm a K&N evangelist, but tonight I feel that perhaps I've met my nemesis.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Do I have to disconnect the battery & have the computers learn the new airflow?

    Texas of course!
what year was the M3? Was this from a stop or a roll.?

Your lucky if any air filter is going to give you more than 5HP. Many intake systems that include the air box only make a little more than that. What did you expect K&N filter would do? I have one also, but ported throttle bodies, chip and other items to go along with it.

The last two engines I've installed K&N and/or CAI's on have DRAMATICALLY increased power.

    That is what I expected.

On the LS1 - sensation of more torque off the line.

    On the VQ35DE - a turbo-boost sensation about 3K RPM.

    Believe it, or not.

I'm guessing approx 2004 (looked like an E46).

It was from a stop, but I let him get the jump because I wasn't aware the Beamer had balls. He'd probably win by an inch if we had another, fair match.

BTW - I do not condone such behavior.

Slightly off-topic, but keep a close eye on your MAF's. K&N filters right out of the box tend to have too much oil on them, which will coat your sensor wires, and if left unchecked(not cleaned off) it will cause permanent damage. I have seen a lot of OEM GM MAF's die this way......

I installed a K&N in my 348. Did not notice any difference. I have used them in previous vehicles (LT4 Corvette, Porsche 993, Chevy Suburban) without much effect. The only one '83 308 seemed to increase throttle response. It may have been my imagination as well.

Never had a MAF problem either. You have to be more careful with re-oiling them.

That sucks, no difference and the posibility of ruining the MAF(S):(

I worked Porsche Parts sales and sold many MAF sensors as a result of customers putting K&N filters in, and the oil residue ruining the sensor wires.
Not a big fan of them if that is the only thing you are doing.

I used to use K&N filters but decided that, short of improving throttle response, they didn't offer much. FYI, my E36M3 was slightly faster than my 348 Spider, so an E46 M# is going to dominate. Pick your fights better, dude. Now, if you want to embarass it, you need to improve your intake and exhaust capacity. Remember, Ferraris don't leave much free Hp lying around. You have to work to find those hidden ponies.

    the porsche sentance is right,
you over oil those things and you'll have all kinds of problems.
    they gunk things up....
I wouldn't use them, unless you're willing to clean things up
periodically. they didn't do much for the cars I used them on.
One good thing is that you can clean them and reuse it, over and over.

The only time you will see gains from a high flow air filter is if the filter itself is the restricting factor in the intake system. If the engine ony requires about 500-600 cfm at max rpm, and the OEM filter flows more than that(most do), putting in a K&N will do zippo. The most likely culprits for intake restriction are the airbox, MAF's, and rubber ducting. Improving and smoothing the airflow in those areas will make noticable gains in most cars.

Drove around with the top down & the sound from the engine is GREAT :)

That alone makes it worth the $40.

Also, I seem to get improved response at higher speeds (90+)!

Not so bad after all... of course, I don't have a dyno in my backyard to back up these findings.

    x2! :):)
When I get a K&N for my 348, I will do a dyno run to see if there are any HP gains. Something to do................but I aint expecting much. :):)

Yes, be careful when re-oiling (once ever 50K miles) as its easy to overdo the oil.

When installing new I always shake the element & dab it with a cloth just to be sure. I also don't push the engine for 10 miles. This is just me though - its overkill.

    Loving the new sound!

    Ricambi = highly recommended.

Good to hear that. My f-car pal here in the states, said the same. So thats two opinions I 'trust' for the freeflow air cleaners :D.

How about the cappy did that 'feel' any better too?
