looking for an 02/03 Aston Martin. I simply don't know much about them. Can some one give me a price range and anything particuarily that needs to be inspected? Helping my brother. He wanted a 550 now has gone to British- I could help him w/ Ferrari but not with the Aston. Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

All AM's including the Vanquish depreciate like rocks. Check private party auctions on ebay. Dealer pricing is completely unrealistic based on real market value.

The only thing I've heard going bad on the Vanquish is the tranny. Other than seeing if it's been replaced I don't know how you would really check it.

Same pre-purchase routine as F-cars EXCEPT in the case of British cars, only consider examples with factory warranty. Or smack some sense into brother....Can you say, M A R A N E L L O.

I know I had em on the 550. He even had a deposit on one and ran a PPI. Car came back w/ oil leaks and spooked him. He then took a step down and now says the 2+2 is more appropriate for his needs. ....but I hear you, he won't have the fun that he would have in the Maranello and will suffer the British depreciation.

What can I say, he might have to learn the hard way, but I told him I'd scout. Private listing seems the best approach. That is initially what I thought too.

Funny thing you should mention the Vanquish. My father called me yesterday and he is trading his 512 TR tomorrow for an '03 in Florida close to where he lives. Price is just under $120 with 18,000 miles. I saw the car when I was down there for Cavallino recently and it is clean. I will be driving it next month when I go there for Easter. Maybe he will let me take it up here to Louisville just to road trip in it:)

Although the dealer I talked to said the tranny was "bulletproof" I have heard of several bad ones. They say the trick is to put them in nuetral when ideling for any length of time or else the clutchs are just slipping. As with any new technology, get the latest version IE I would avoid 02s.
    PS; Vanquish > Maranello

Yep wished I had known your father was trading the TR for other reasons and I hope you can get the Vanquish up here. They are stunning cars.

I'll be in Naples in a couple of weeks w/ my brother so I think the black one that is mentioned might be a winner and may fit the bill and he won't have to buy sight unseen.

    thanks for the leads,

If you stop in to Naples Motorsports ask for Rob, he's the general manager. They're very low (or no) pressure down there. Their cars are usually flawless. I've bought from them 6 or 7 times.

Well, actually that is good to do in any electromagnetic-clutched 6 speed. I do that both with my Ferrari and my Vanquish.

I'd try to get an S if at all possible rather than the earlier ones, as he may prefer the sportier ride in the S. It is certainly not as harsh as in a Ferrari. The earlier Vanqs have a more compliant/softer ride.

You can have all the software upgrades downloaded at any Aston Martin dealership. Make sure to get the '06 coils/plugs/intake plenum upgrade- it'll add a few HP. And by all means have them bypass the exhaust-bypass (ie open it up).

The F1 in my S is far and away better than that in my 360 spider, not even close. There is nothing wrong with the transmission, 11,000 miles on mine, never had a problem with it. It has only been in the shop for routine maintenance, which is every 7000miles, compared to the pain in the ass yearly of the Ferrari (oh **** it's march, the god d@mn 360 is due yet again).

The "alleged" problem occurs most often when cars sit and the batteries go down. The computer goes into safe mode and starts to shut down and the "memory" program gets discombobled (at least the Aston learns how you drive, the Ferrari doesn't [You can actually teach the tranny where the clup slippage point is, whilst sitting in your garage.]). Put a trickler on it and you're done.

That is a problem with all exotics. You need to drive them and drive them hard or you'll develop problems.

Good luck, you're dad will be pleased, it is truly a fantastic car! He won't regret getting rid of the Ferrari- I know I won't if my wife will ever let me (I gave it to her).

Personally I've made the jump from Maranello to Aston Martin, (although not a Vanq), But I have to say I wished I'd done it a long time ago....

    Argento

PS - Doesn't make me any less passionate about the Marque, But for lots of reasons I love my Aston.

They say it's nice to have owned a Ferrari, but once you've put an Aston in your garage you'll have one in there for the rest of your life.........
