I'm trading my 348 for another Ferrari and the guy insists that my lower rear bumper has been repainted due to it's appearance. We're talking about the lowest part of the bumper the has the cutouts for the mufflers. I know it's different material then the upper bumper which would cause the paint to look different, but I thought all 348's were like this. Can you guys provide some pics of yours and feedback to I can prove to this guy that mine is no different. (Unless it is)....the paint just looks a little wavy, not smooth. Again, I thought they were all like that. Let me know and thanks. It will mean a few more bucks for the trade. Like 2k.

OEM was indeed a bit rougher than normal paint. Not quite 'texture', but not exactly gloss smooth.

+1. In fact prior to 1992 ish the black of the early cars looking boxer trimish was actually painted over the body color. many liked the monchromatic look later in ther series. You can actually use brake cleaner to strip the black paint off and reveal the body color under it.

That guy seems a bit fussy! If it's the original paint it may have faded a bit more than the metal pannels anyway. To my knowledge mine was colour coded some time ago and it's showing a bit of 'crazing' on the paint now (probably due to the heat i would say).I tried to take pics but the car's Black and they won't show much!
Sounds to me like he's trying to pull a fast one to get more money out of you. $2,000 ! You don't mention if your lower part is Black (original) or body coloured. If it is body coloured it has been painted (unless it's a '94 car) but so what, most people have done this to make it look like the later models. If you had it repainted your self to keep him happy, how much would it cost? $500 ? I would go back to him and say you will get it repainted, then ask him what colour he would like it!!!! don't budge on the price is my advise!!

Is the body color paint under the black layer got as many coats as the paint on the rest of the car? If I take the black paint off would it look OK or does it need some additional paint coats to make it match the rest of the car?

I like black because it is easy to paint over paint chips.

Your car is black to start with, but the lower portion should be more of a flat black. It may have been repainted (very common) to match the top or even as FBB said the matte black is painted over the original paint and maybe able to remove it. The rear deck lid should be flat black as well. Starting in '93 the panels were all the same color. Called speciale paint scheme.

I don't think it detracts either way.
