I am going to be running the little p-car at Road Atlanta this weekend and next with the BMW club and then with NASA. If anyone is interested in checking out what a fun track weekend is like.... come on up and hang out.

A bunch of guys are running this friday as well and its a very loose and open format setup for the friday event, usually lots of fun.

Any idea where you'll be parked with the Porsche. (I wouldnt mind checking it out).

Mark, tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful, if your heading up let me know. (I have tomorrow off and was gonna take the Pantera up on Saturday, but take a quick trip in the P-car tomorrow.....)

Yes, this weekend. As in I will be on the track flogging the daylights out of the p-car 24 hours from now.

No idea where I will be parked, but it wont be terribly crowded on Friday. The car is a Maroon colored 1969 911S with a RS style ducktail rear tail. It will be the only early 911S there.... so shouldn't be hard to find!

On Saturday and Sunday I will have 2 students so when not out driving myself much of the time I will be riding around with students so if you see my car and I am not about I will be back soon.

I want to go to an open track day at RA later this year. I like NASA events a lot. Who else would you recommend I look into for schedules? Thanks.

I hear RA was just resurfaced too.

    Terry,

Are these the best times to attend, with the BMW club or NASA? Are there other open track days at Road Atlanta and what is the best way to get involved? I have very little track experience but recently moved to Atlanta and would like to start taking my 348 out.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Road Atlanta was indeed just repaved. Go here to see some discussion about it and some photos of the new track:

    http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=11980

I instruct at track day events for PCA, BMWCCA and NASA. Will probably be doing the same for the Audi club as well. All 3 of these groups put on a good event though NASA is by far the best with BMW club very close behind. PCA is fun but far too anal and up tight about nonsense at times. There are lots of events at Road Atlanta, Barber, Roebling, CMP, Little Talledega and other tracks not too far off for a weekend.

Go here for schedules and info on signing up:

    https://www.motorsportreg.com/

    http://www.trackschedule.com/sched.html

No experience is required to sign up for most events but beware that the events fill up very fast for the novice groups so sign up as early as possible. You will get good classroom instructions, good in car instruction and plenty of track time. You will need to have your car track prepped and tech inspected. I would strongly advise flushing all brake fluid and replacing with ATE Super Blue racing fluid or an equivalent plus get some track compound brake pads. Otherwise once you start pushing the car near its potential, you WILL boil the brakes.

If you make it up this weekend and look me up, I can probably swing you a ride around the track. You must sign the waivers.... accidents have been known to happen... YMMV and all that good stuff. In other words, If I create a new smudge on the wall while your riding, well its not my fault!

Terry, Thanks for the links. The trackschedule one is very helpful. Can't make it to ROA this weekend but I'll shoot for the 8/11 NASA one.

One last Q...... Is tomorrow "restricted" for participants and instructors in the paddocks, or is it ok to come up and snoop around. (I've only been up there during the PCA or BMW DE's on Sat/Sun where it was ok)

(If its ok then, I think its too nice of a day to pass up a mini trip to R/A. I'll be in a white-all-over 04'C4S)

    Just a quick heads up....

The Audi club is putting on a DE at Road Atlanta April 21-22, SAT AND SUN. Registration is currently open and they have plenty of novice and intermediate group slots open. Go to motorsportreg.com and you can register. I will be instructing so bring your F-car and request me so I don't have to ride around in just Audi's ;) It does look like a good event and is likely to draw a bit smaller crowd which means lots of track time.

I will be at Road Atlanta again with NASA this coming weekend, but the event is full. Still, you can come out and check it all out.

Bob: I know its a bit late, but all of these type events are pretty much good with spectators coming up and checking things out.

    Terry....Thanks much........

I usually try to head up to the BMW and PCA DE's........... especially on Sundays if possible. I could not break free Sunday to head up there (was kinda office-bound in the house from 6am-830pm).

I'll mark the next down for sure. (Plus be at the PCA club race next weekend). I did see that jester911 (jerry) over on rennsouth posted there was an event up there this weekend, and either way think I will head up there on Saturday.

BTW..... How is the track since its been paved, and from what I hear, slightly altered in some places?

    ....strike two for Bob.

I came up Sunday morning but you were out with a student. Then after you were back in, didnt wanna interrrupt after the ride with them. (BMW right?).

....there's always next time. (Man some of those older 240/260 Z's were excellent that were parked behind you. That yellow and burgundy one were amazing looking!)

......and then some of the stuff up there was down-right-scary looking.......

It was a fun weekend with NASA. I had one student in group 1 novices in a 2005 Subaro WRX that was bone stock. He did very well, made great progress over the weekend.

My second student was a hoot. A 72 year old retired corporate pilot from France. He had signed up for group 2. His english was ok but you needed to speak slowly and clearly. He had a 2006 ZO6 Corvette, red #22 that was TOTALLY tricked out. It had all the suspension and brake mods, big wing in the back, trick splitter up front, all sorts of gizmos on it and best of all he had 570hp at the wheels!

Our first session out he clearly didnt understand the concept of passing only with a point by from the driver in front. First time on the back straight he goes blowing by about 10 cars before I can get him to slow down! On a clear lap we hit 160mph.

We get back to the pits after the session and I ask him how much prior experience he had (didnt get a chance to ask before...). He tells me that he had tracked this Vette 3 times last year and had done the Panoz track day in early March. Then he tells me he used to race cars back in the 1970s a good bit. I ask him what kind of racing, he says it was back in France. "Have you ever heard of LeMans?" He says he raced at the 24 hours of LeMans 7 times during the late '60s through mid '70s in Porsches!

He was a really nice guy and I got him moved to group 3 and signed him off solo so he wouldnt terrorize the guys in group 2. He wasn't terribly fast, except on the straights where he was a rocket.

I also had a 935 blowup right in front of me covering the front of my car in oil early Saturday afternoon and in course of running through Saturday I managed to crack my right front brake rotor just about all the way through. I ran one session Sunday taking it real easy on brakes but the crack got worse so I called it a weekend.

Overall lots of fun. I hope to see more F-chatters come out!

I'll be laping around on the track on Sunday morning with the SCCA guys. They're having some DE track time for track workers and friends (PDX) with street cars (street legal exhaust). A couple or three 20 minute sessions with instructor - solo w/signoff. Luckily, I have a good friend who does their pace car duties (and an instructor) . Have to be a member of the SCCA however.
