At nornal operating temperature, and at idling speeed, i have alot of white smoke pouring out of the right hand side twin exhaust tail pipe (looking at rear of car) when i am driving, its like fog and the guy behind me cannot see me for the smoke (good for a James Bond movie!).
Can anybody tell me if it is a cylinderhead gasket that has failed?
Does the engine need to be removed for this to be fixed?
If the engine has got to come out, on this model can the engine be dropped from the bottom, or does it lift out from the top?

    Your comments are appreciated.

    Thankyou

    Sir Marco

Yes sounds more than likely a cylinder head problem or even worse a cracked head.Heads can be pulled out with engine in the car but its very difficult and if the head is tight then it makes it even harder and its almost just as eay to remove the engine. The motor lifts out from the top on the GT4.

White smoke usally means either water, transmission fluid or brake fluid is entering the combustion chamber. Check out the level on those basics first to see if a vacuum line from a diaphragm is sucking oil into the motor that way first ;) Hopefully it will be something simple :)......other than the head gasket :(

Can you tell me, what needs to be removed from the engine, for the engine to be lifted out, can the engine be lifted out with the air conditioning pump attached, and are there any specific places for attaching lifting eyes, and are there any lifting eyes on the engine, also can the engine be lifted out with the exhaust manifolds attached.

    Thanks

Easy there big fella! PAP348 gave you a good tip.

Check the fluids, if your brake booster has a vacuum leak you will suck brake fluid right into the intake manifold resulting in the white smoke you describe.

If you really need to pull the motor you will need to make it a bit smaller first (remove exhaust and accessories as needed).

Here's another tip: Fill in your profile so we know a bit more about the new guy.

If you need to remove the motor you have to unbolt the front and rear exhaust manifolds, the A/C compressor, its generally easier to remove the clutch bell housing, disconnect the drive shafts, disconnect the shift shaft linkage, obviously all fluids and engine mounts, starter motor teminals and alternator terminals, oil cooler lines. Its easier to remove the engine lid as well.Put some protective cover around the rear window. You will need a load leveler attached to the engine hoist and it takes 2-3 men to remove and guide the motor.Again check that it isn't brake fluid getting sucked up the vaccum line.

Steam coming from the RH pipes of a carb 308 is completely normal.. in colder climates, the condensation and combustion water build up is extensive, and the RH pipe comes from the forward bank (5-8) and is therefore longer.

This longer pipe takes much longer to get really hot, and water will often build up to remarkable levels.. finally getting hot enough to boil and steam.. Accellerate hard up a steep hill to force all the water out your exhaust system (front engine V12 carb cars like 330/400/Daytona/C4 etc should do this as often as possible to prolong exhaust life!)

If the engine is running fine, other than the steam, then I'd say all is ok. But of course... if you really do have heavy white smoke then you need to find out more.

Check your coolant for the presence of hydrocarbons.. easily done by most good mechanic shops. And check your exhaust gases too.

Shine a bright light through the smoke.. you may find it's more blue than white perhaps?... indicating oil burning.

Check the spark plug condition... take a pic close up of the plugs and post it here.

It won't be a brake booster/fluid problem, as the pipe connects to the 1-4 cyl intake

Thanks for your technical advice, which is appreciated.
I have purchased both inlet manifold gaskets, and will attempt to do the job myself. Can you give me advice on what to remove, save removing more than needs to be removed? Will i need to drain the engine block, or can i get away with just draining the radiator? Will i need any other gaskets for anything else?

As always your replies are valuable to me!

    Thank you

    Sir Marco

P.S. Will post you pics of plugs when i can find my digital camera>
