Every Sunday. Cars start to show up about 7AM and many leave by 10AM. The better the weather the more the cars. The third weekend in Jauary when it was 60 degrees and sunny there were over 600 cars. Do a search on Captree and there is plenty of info.

The long straights down Ocean parkway are tempting, but be careful the LEOs have been out in force as of late.

Will definitely be there. Looking for a huge turnout. There is already an article in Suffolk life. Trying to show support for a proposed track and hopefully some kind of circuit as well.

The weather on Saturday may keep a lot of the collector/exotic cars at home on Sunday.

Meeting up at a parking lot with a bunch of folks isn't going to do bupkis in regards to getting a track.

Racetracks are like methodone clinics and homeless shelters: everybody is for them until they want to build them near their house.

Sad but true :(. I remember hearing all the reports and rumors of Englishtown being closed down. They already had to put a barrier wall to help cancel out the noise and they added restrictions to certain cars for noise levels. And what's F'd up about it is that except for a few houses, Raceway Park was the only thing out there. Now they have all these new houses and developments going up so eventually Englishtown may be history :(.

How come we couldn't be like some european countries or Germany specifically and have a Nurburgring or test track like Volkswagen? :(

I stopped by Captree this morning as usual. The rally for a drag strip out east was in full swing by 8AM. The rally was totally unorganized. After walking around for a while I finally found someone giving out a form that was to be mailed, no petitions nor were there any speeches or any organized activity concerning the rally. I was happy that the weather was poor enough that the regulars were totally absent except for 2 guys I recognized that regularly stop by on Sundays The normal Sunday gathering would have been a mess. I was sure happy I did not bring my 308. It would have been completely out of place today. The main lot was full of hundreds of guys and women just milling around after arriving in their daily drivers there

I can't say that I am surprised by this. The reality is that you get the politicos first, before you get people in cars to show up. My block has been fighting with city hall to get this guy who has a parking spot because he runs some company that is designated as a church revoked. This has been going on for years! If it takes this much time, effort, and money to nix ONE designated parking spot -- can you imagine the effort to get zoning approved for a racetrack? It just isn't going to happen.

Sorry to sound defeatist about this, but anybody who thinks that showing up on a sunday with a bunch of cars is going to do anything is severly mistaken about the process of such things.

You guys are better off calling up Al Sharpton and telling him that the lack of a racetrack represents an organized repression of your constitutional rights. Then, maybe, Spitzer might listen.

The only point you made that I disagree with is about thinking that this group showing up on Sunday will not do anything. They have apparently succeeded in demonstrating how poorly organized their strategy is ;-).

While it could have been a bit better organized it was a start and if someone here has better ideas please let everyone know. This did have a purpose and its getting noticed. News 12, suffolk life and Newsday were in attendence and printing articles about it. The legislature are now hearing of the this and hopefully will start to act. No need for more Debbie Downers.

Either at county owned Yaphank property near the jail or the Grumman space in Calverton. So many reasons the others closed. ONe was that the track was there before people moved in, then the people that moved in complained even though track was there first.

Even though it's far out, the airstrip at Calverton would be nice. I'm not familiar with Yaphank but I was viewing an aerial shot of the airstrip a while back and it seems like a perfect spot. Pretty much isolated.

That's funny but not funny that residents that came afterwards complained about the track forcing it's closure :(. Seems to be the same deal with Englishtown last I heard. But I doubt it'll happen with Raceway Park (I hope), it's too famous and sponsors a lot of big events.

Seeing as how so many ordinary people complain about street racing and such, they really should build a track in NY and the 'ordinary' people shouldn't complain about it. I'm not saying it will all disappear but it'll help eliminate a lot of the street racing (hopefully).

Hah that brought a smile to my face.

LotusTT -- there was a major initiative to bring NASCAR to Staten Island iirc, that was nixed. This was with a major national sport pushing and I even believe Paul Neuman. Sure wish there was a racetrack that was closer to Manhattan, however, I don't see it happening anytime soon. Just being a realist.

The overwhelming amount of stories on the news of street racing and its related tragedies should be enough reason for there to be a track. If Long Island wants any drop in street racing the track is the only "real" way for a noticeable affect to be seen. And Nabbs you are not being a realist, because I've seen crazier things passed in NY. When enough voters make a stink about something and letters get written almost anything is possible.
