Does anyone have some extra time to help with a lift install in my garage? I finally have my lift to install so my newly acquired Porsche for racing can reside under my Ferrari. (If one gets crushed we all know which one it should be)

I know you are all thinking that sounds like it would be heavy and really suck. Well it is heavy and will suck, but it says it should only take 4-6 hours and what you will get is the use of a lift whenever you need it. Which if you have ever tried to change cats or exhaust without one you will know why this would be helpful. I figure it should be somewhat interesting to see how this fits in a garage as well.

So if someone has time this weekend or next week PM me and we can work out a time.

    Thanks,

    Mark

Thanks to Fellow F-chatter Brendon I now have my 4 post lift installed. It turned out to not be as involved as I first thought it would be. I'll have pictures of the cars stacked as soon as the garage door people come and raise the opener a few feet.

Also thanks to everyone who offered to help, I never expected to get it done so fast.

    Mark,

Brendon has been telling me about what a sweet setup your new lift is. I am interested in getting one myself. Currently I am paying storage because I have more cars than space... I need a lift !

Where did you get yours? Can you give me details on costs, who is doing your garage door mods and such?

My garage has a 12 foot ceiling so I have enough space but I would have to have the garage door modified to turn up at the ceiling instead of at the top of the garage door opening as it does now.

Terry. My ceiling is just short of 10' with a 4-post, and had them raise it to just down from the ceiling. (the side rails stayed, but they added a 36" radius with new top tracks, torque-springs..etc for about $400......perfect job)

(Mark. Not sure what your lift config is.....mine is a SS7000/Eagle, but, I bought two large 4x8 3/4" pink styro and cut to size as two mini-floors between the ramps down on the lip area to keep any debris from the upper car off the lower..........loose stuff from the road that might fall later)

Anyone that wants to see my new lift can just PM me and I'll give directions and stuff.

I'll let you know about the garage modifications at the end of the week, but they said it should be about $400.
The lift itself was $2,000 delivered to the freight terminal here in Atlanta. It is very heavy (1800 pounds) and will not fit into a truck (14 foot long hunk of steel). You need a trailer, which I rented from Uhaul for $29.

I bought it from http://www.pantherlifts.com and they had it at the ABF freight place 48 hours after I ordered it. Ask for Linda if you call. Mine is the 7000 pound lift.

Mine also came with plastic catches that run the full length, plus wheels to move it around (although Brendon and I couldn't figure out how these worked), and a metal sliding center part about 2 feet wide which I think is a jack plate or oil catch or something. It also has the bolts to mount it to the floor if you wanted to do that.

Overall it was a lot cheaper than building onto my garage or moving. Also I can see all kinds of uses for having the car in air. It also gives me a whole new section of the Ferrari to clean.

Pictures to follow in a couple of days.

kaamacat who did your garage work?? The guy I talked to seemed like this would be his first time to figure this out.

Just call the company you are buying the lift from and ask for a local installation company. When I bought my lift a couple of years back the lift company gave me the name of a local company who I had the lift shipped to and then they delivered and installed it for me for $250 as I recall...well worth it IMHO...

I see it as an opportunity for a get together. I tried to make it up to Mark's but could only make it on Sunday. When I called Saturday they were just about done. So...... Terry (or anyone else) if you need any help give me a call or post it here and you'll have all the help you need.

Plus, I'm not sure I would want to store my Ferrari or get under a lift installed by a bunch of friends...you or a child could get killed by a lift ? Another good reason to use an professional local installer is if it fails...you have someone local to sue...hey, I'm a lawyer!

It's just nuts and bolts, can't be too difficult to put together. If I had the room (I do have the need) for a lift I would much rather spend the $250 for refreshments and have a few guys come over and put one together, but that's just me.

I watched mine being put together and installed by two guys and the putting together part did look simple...but, it is some heavy pieces... and, my installers did use a laser level to install it as well as bolted it to the floor for security. If it is not installed level can will bind/stick with your car stuck up in the air...my installers told me of a guy that that happened to and while he was trying to unbind the cables, one side dropped and the car slide partially off...he then had to hire them and pay a pretty penny to get the car down... plus repair the car and the damage to his garage wall. While, I too believe I could do it myself, for $250 considering the danger involved, my own safety as well as my children, its just not worth the risk IMHO. As far as needed "room" is concerned, the lift I bought only required a 10' ceiling which almost all garages have...

Well mine is up now and seems to work great so I don't have to worry about it.
I think the story about the car sliding off part of it is probably an urban legend since with the system mine has that would be impossible for one side to go without the other.

Mark. Very nice...(looks very simliar to mine)..... a few things.

If the "casters" you got are mounted on a forked looking object. What you do is (with car raised), slide them in from the side under two protruding 1/2"-round spikes on each post...... when you then lower the car, the ramps hit the end of the "forks", and then raise all four corners.

That other item is probably a jack tray. (Good for some short/fat 40ton bottle jacks).

One other thing I did. I got two 4x8x3/4" pink wall inslulation from Home depot. Made two pieces to exactly fit down the center, wrapped some red duct tape around the edges........placed on the 3" rail areas. (just to keep any loose stuff that might fall off the top car later)

As for safety..... heck you've got stops on all 4 corners, plus each of those cables (if its the same) are rated at 12K each. (plenty of beef)

GOOD LUCK.........I've had mine for 3years and love it!!!!

It's actually pretty easy to get in and out of the bottom car. The Porsche will be a track car whenever I get done with it. I haven't even put plates on it yet.

That's my blue 355 up there. It's in front of a single garage door. My ceilings are about 12'.
