I've had a couple Ferrari's (355 Spider/360 Spider). Just traded my 360 in on a '06 Gallardo (i know the dark side). But I've been looking for a 1976 Car (year i was born). MY local dealer here (Maserati of Mpls) just got in a 1976 Ferrari 308.

Here is what I know about the car.

    1976 308 GTB
    2 Owners (Verifying)
    All service History Documentation
Last Full Service was like in 1991
    Runs/Drives Good
    Fiberglass
    Silver over Black
    original manuals/etc.
    ~13,500 Miles

If my photomemory serves me correctly it is #19735

All majors work, headlights, stereo, heat/etc.

Spoke to another local guy here (Thanks Paul) on what to look for, but now I'm trying to figure out what this car is worth and what to offer.

The guy knows it needs a full service and have an estimate of around 5600-6500 (seem about right)

Assuming everything checks out, would love to get some thoughts on this.

    Thanks in advance

Sounds like a keeper...I assume North American version as you did not list dry sump motor...

High number on the 'glass cars at $50K now, and trending up.....maybe subtract your service $$$$ from that number if negotiable...

$30K, and you stole it! LOL!

1991 Service just don't cut it...no belts since then?

Don't even START it, if not..... :D

No service since 1991??? That include oil changes?? Sheesh...I'm surprised someone had the balls to even start it up with 16 year old belts.

A glass 308 is a great "investment" as far as that goes. Are you planning on driving it a lot? If so you'll pay more than you will for a similar steel car so you might look elsewhere, especially since this one is in SERIOUS need from 16 years of neglect! But since you have a Gallardo, I expect it will be more of a show car and weekend fun car, so it may be a great choice for you. I would put a premium on cosmetics in that case, and especially originality! You don't want a glass Frankenstein and pay up for the pleasure. Assuming it needs $10k to really get it in shape, I would say if you get out under $40k total it would be a reasonable purchase. I'm curious what others think!

There has been service. Just not major service (like the belts/etc.)

it will be a weekender for sure.

Also, note i adjusted the mileage, i was incorrect on mileage, dealer just sent me the actual milage and it is 13,500.

Maybe.......that's a questionable number at this point unless title transactions bear this out..

What do they have in it??.....trade in?????

If it runs and drives well anything below $40K is well bought IMO.......but again, the belt change interval has been reduced to 3 years regardless of mileage by Ferrari of North America so if those are in fact 1991 belts that's pushing your luck in a real way......I have a car one 12 year old belts as well I consider it a time bomb, do not drive it that way....

Right now its on consignment so they are able to work with it a bit. If I buy it, it will be serviced before it leaves the dealer.

Do you think 40k with the service or 40k + the service?

My limit on the car would be $40k out the door (. And only because its a glass car). If they are going to charge a premium price , it needs to be a premium car with up to date service.

Id also REALLY have all the body panels inspected and a VERY extensive PPI with leak done and comression tests done if your paying that for the car(or any Fcar for that matter. The major service may cost $5k, but Id put money on the fact youll end up with an additional $5k on all the other crap thats going to come up.

    Ask me how I know.

At $40k plus a service, youd better want to hold onto it for awhile. Youll be in the red from day one if they dont do that service included in the price.

Is the car from the local area?

Sounds like you're comfortable at $40K. I'd make it include the service, it's a lot of money and there are a lot of 308's out there.

I know that the Maser dealer is the "big swinging dick" in town right now with their Maserati franchise and all. They are building their presence and lobbying for a Ferrari sign (doubt it can happen). I wonder how they really are with older cars that they don't sell or stock parts for. I am told that the Jaguar/Lotus dealer won't touch a car older than '98 any more.

Yes, if you leave the car parked all the time you could cheap out all the way and just leave the belt off the car altogether, saving $15.

Okay, this is a perfect test of the Ferrari-chat price theory. The advice here is not to pay a cent over $40,000. The question arises - can you actually get a car for what everyone tells you on Ferrari-chat you should pay?

If you're willing to be a guinea pig, then please, please tell us what happens when/if you make $40,000 your ceiling.

If the car sells for $43,000, or $44,700, or $51,000, or even $40,235, it would be extremely informative. Similarly, if the car sells for $30,950, we should know.

Do keep the forum informed...it helps everyone recalibrate their "bench-negotiating".

If the cosmetics are really pristine, it should be worth 50K with a fresh service and everything sorted. As others have noted, 308's that have been sitting can really be money pits. It probably needs much more than just belts, etc. I would budget 10K to get it fully sorted, so I am in the 40K camp as is.

Minnesota is a more frugal market.

Historically (I've been paying attention for most of 20 years) it is hard to get the money that you can get on the coast.

I have seen a lot of nice cars leave town because nobody here would pay what someone in Las Vegas or California would.

The car is on consignment right now at the dealer. Right now the lowest the owner wants to go is 39k NO SERVICE included.

The guys over at Mas are going to look at it tomorrow and give me their initial thoughts/reactions after doing a better look at it. They would do the service there. I've been very happy so far with the amount and quality of service they have provided on all of our other cars. I know they are lobbying pretty hard for Ferrari, at least service, to start with.

From my initial look/feel of the car, it is in great shape cosmetically. Obviously with only 13k miles on it since new it hasn't been driven much. According to the story (verifying) the original owner traded it to the current owner this past winter in exchange for a vette race car the current owner had. Supposedly the service records indicate that it went in every year for service and they only replaced items that needed it. With that being said, if that was true, why weren't the belts, etc. changed as a "needed" item.

It does fire right up when started with no indication of issues idling/running.

The dealer is waiting for the service records, etc. to be dropped off for review as well.

So question that i'm debating is what will the car be worth when its fully serviced. Since they don't come up for sale often with the miles and condition it is in I'm torn. I'll know more tomorrow after the service guys do their inspection.

But so far, the Ferrari Chat group is very close on pricing with the 39k that the current owner is asking, but that's without the service.....

Thanks to everyone so far on the feedback. Appreciate any more if anyone else has further thoughts!

    Joe

    Tim,

The car was in CA until it was just traded to the local owner this past fall/winter.

We are waiting for the service history/etc. to verify.

FWIW, there's a glass car on the Bay Area "Cars/Trucks" section of Craigslist.org. Apparently, the guy is "accepting offers."

If you like silver/black, and like the GTB, and it passes a compression test, and you want a '76: buy the car. $39K is very reasonable if it checks out. Offer something close to that. Then budget $10K to service it, replace fuel lines, tires and other stuff it will definitely need. As Dave said, $50K for a top-notch, driveable, low-mileage 'glass car is very reasonable.

Sometimes the hardest thing is when the exact Ferrari you're looking for comes up for sale. This isn't a 360 where you can pick any color, mileage and tranny in the secondary market.

I feel an "oh crap some guy bought it out from under me" thread coming on.

My humble opinion says you are stealing that car for $39k, even without the service. The fiberglass cars are a great investment, and especially considering the mileage, you should jump on it. NOW.

I second that....go on down with the money, if they are firm on the price..

As far as the belt issue goes, if they were following the original 1976 Schedule it was every 15,000 miles Service not age dependent at all...or maybe even 30K miles?

ONly an Authorized dealer would have the later Tech Bulletin changing it to a 3 year interval regardless of miles....understand the difference?

The only other nice 'glass I know of is the black one with the wonky ceiling console, asking $50K and I think it has more miles...if you can verify mileage here off the servoce records I say put it in your garage..

Silver is a very nice color on this car, IMO. Black is also a good interior color for maintenance.

I'd go fluids/filters, all rubber fuel lines...belts and tensioners, and drive on....that's probably $1,500......
