I live in one of those idiotic states (Connecticut) that requires a front license plate. I'm working on getting my first Ferrari (either a TR or 348) but I've never seen one with a front license plate holder. It's a crime to destroy the lines of a front air dam. Has anyone else that lives in a 2-plate state found a way around this problem?

Welcome to FChat. If you do a search for "front plate" you should find the answers you are looking for. The search button is the first one on the menu bar.

Do they require one, or do they inforce it? That's the question. I'm a bad citizen, I never run mine.

Most people don't put them on... then if you get pulled over, you can attach one temporarily and go and get the ticket dismissed... so I've heard at least. :)

If you're in one of those strict states like me, just use a couple of tie wraps and tie the plate up under the bumper, where it's not very noticable and easily removable for shows. Just be sure not to obstruct the air flow to the radiator and put felt or other material on the back of the plate, so it won't scratch the paint.

I would think some sort of frame could be fabricated that would screw into the hole in the air dam of a TR that the tow hook screws into. Maybe someone can make some and sell them here. I know I'd buy one.....Charlie

We are supposed to have front plates in Colorado. Obviously, I don't want to drill holes in the 360.

Thought of using velcro, but if it came loose or fell off at speed could do some damage or hurt somebody.

Saw a unique solution: A guy had gone to a photo company and had a plastic picture of his front plate made and taped it on with clear plastic tape which looked like packing tape (a few inches wide). No damage to the car and looked like a plate. Don't know how hard it was to take off the front spoiler. Perhaps some other Fchatters have more information.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I was stopped by a State Patrol for not having a front plate on the 355. I think he just wanted to look at the car. I went to court and told them I had put the plate on the car (it was in the front windshield). The DA did not check and dropped the charges. So it was just a hassle going to court with 200 other highway criminals.

I have a "special plate" on my car now (we do that in Colorado). My theory is that since it is for charity that they will leave me alone. I have been stopped in the 360. Never ticketed and the front plate was never mentioned by the police. But it's Aspen. They are REAL laid back here if you are polite to them.

It is a discretionarily enforced law. Most consider it a cost of doing business. You may get a ticket (many have) but consider it a greater cost (crime) to mount it.

In 5 years only one ticket I can live with that rather than screw up the front of the car.

IL is lax on front plates. I've never had one as I also have no place to mount it. Never been pulled over for it, and lots of sports cars don't use them. I've never seen a Vette with one in IL.

CT is known for it's strict enforcement of rules (my Dad lives there) so I would have a front plate somehow if I lived there. Or at least keep the plate behind the seat and make up a good story about the frame being back ordered from Italy!

I have one!..........For a 87 TR, I will be taking it off, If you want to purchase it, let me know.

Was on the car when I got it, from NY. Dont need it in Florida, It is a custom fab alum, or stainless bracket assembly, and there is no radiator in the front of a TR so dont worry about overheating...........

It seems to be an alum bracket on top and bottom that run the full width, bent at the correct spacing and drilled with the correctly spaced holes, the the plate and a plate frame get bolted to it, pretty simple.
I will be taking it off and cleaning and re-painting this area, when I do I will be able to get better pics of the back of the bracket.

You can always bend and scuff up the plate a little. When they ask to see it, pull it out and say it fell off.

    Same philosophy here.

Keep your owners manual with you, tagged to the page. Because it says right in there "do not block this area" regarding the front grill. See if that helps.

I have a friend of mine who has a Ford GT. He ended up making a photocopy of his plate, reduce it, and mount it in a small motorcycle frame and put that on the front of the GT. He hasn't been stopped yet.

    cheers

This is the best thing you can do. I got pulled over once, not in a Ferrari but in a 350Z. Cop said the reason why he pulled me over was because I don't have front plates. He didn't give me a ticket but he told me to put my front plates on and take it to the police station for him to see. After a couple of days, I went there to show my car. When the cop saw me, he quickly said "alright, you're good to go" without even looking at my plates. I was really mad because he just wasted my time. When I got home, I removed it again and I haven't been pulled over since then.

IMO, sports cars shouldn't be required to have front license plates.
