Question for the masses here. I am wanting to put Webers on my 81 Mondial. I have a set of 40 DCNF-12 carbs. I have been told b a very knowledgable source that the correct carbs are 40 DCNF-30. I have done very little research on this issue, but what I have read, the -12 was the correct carb for the 308 2 valve. I have purchased the -30 carbs from Scott as we all know as the wild man who has done tons of R and D developing a supercharger kit for the Mondi. I have no reason not to believe him, but just wondering how I got misled thinking the -12 carbs were used on the Ferrari at some point. Any info would be great. The dash 30 carbs are the ones that were used on the early V8's with the huge overlap in the valve timing and has the progression ports set up for that cams manifold vacuum characteristics. If you are going with lots of cam that will have little low RPM manifold vacuum those are the carbs for you. I don't have all my Weber material here so I don't know the application for the dash 12's.
Bret As you know, I put 40DCNF-12 Webers on my Mondial and the 40DCNF-12s are just fine and can be easily and inexpensively jetted for your application. I like the -12s because you can get them NEW. The accept all of the linkage pieces and will also fit the stock airbox and air horns no problem. There are numerous threads on the Mondial's Weber conversion and tuning. Let me know if you need any help - I've been down this road... The top picture is from 23 October 2002 when I first put the carbs on still with the stock Marelli ignition and using a stock 308 airbox vented to the side scoop. The second is with individual filters just to show you thet do fit. best rt Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Russ, Bret has the -12 carbs but no linkage, the carbs were from VW's if I recall correctly. now if he can get them to work great, my concern was the lack of linkage and the top venturis being different. I have NOS -35~-38 webers with linkage. my weber book shows the -12 being used on the fiat x/9 and aftermarket conversion for the VW's. I don't want him to spend more money than is needed, I offered my 'conversion' bits to him to make it easy. I'll leave the final choice to you Bret, no pressure
The -12 differ in a few other ways too (but can work): 1. -12 have 4-bolt top covers -- all stock 308 have 5-bolt top covers, 2. the linkage for the choke mechanism is "reversed", and 3. the mixture screws have a diiferent "gain" -- only ~2 turns open vs 4~5 turns open for stock. See post #3 in this thread: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111681 for the Weber application chart from the Haynes book. The later '78-'79 US 308 used the 40DCNF 72/73/74/75 series.
All correct, as usual. I would recommend working out linkage with Pierce - they have lots available. But as I think, if you could use an entire set from a carb car you will be better off.
Thanks guys for the info. I am going to purchase the complete set up from Scott. At least I can speak intelligently when I sell them. Hey anyone need 4 40 dcnf-12 carbs? Bret
