By Marlboro do you mean Marlboro, Maryland? I used to be a timer at those races in my younger days. Sadly, it is now a shopping center.

my favorite endurance racing memory was about fifteen years or so ago. aj foyt was racing at i believe daytona in i believe an aston martin. his car broke early so one of the leading porsche teams asked if he would like to drive a bit for them. i seem to remember it was at night. so bob wollek came in and aj jumped into bob's car.
    bob was pissed.
he said to reporters..."what are they doing? he has never sat in the car before. he probably doesn't even know the correct shift pattern!".
now wollek was a pretty good driver but he didn't know foyt.

with in a few laps aj was running as fast as wollek had been.

wollek decided it was ok for aj to drive his car.

i can't remember but i think they may have won.

That is a nice effect but you can tell the difference in the car from today and back then. The 67 Targa P4 had a little different roundels. The door roundels go right up to the door window frame/windshield in 67. And in 67 the nose emblem of the prancing horse is smack right in the middle the 2nd number 2. Also the big decal behind the radiator and sail panel are modern. But if you didn't know every crazy little detail you could slip this one by easily. Both car and pic are well done.

That is done on purpose. In Sicily it's considered extremely bad luck to hand paint race numbers exactly as they were on a car that had bad luck on the course before.

Definitely that. It looks like the car that Surtees drove to 5th place in the '65 Monaco GP. The cylindrical component with the cooling fins is, in fact, the fuel pump.

Also a good view of the really effective roll bars that the 60s cars had!

they were a joke in many cases.

the fuel pump reminds me of an oil filter that you used to be able to buy from jc whitney that took toilet paper as a filter element!

i am glad to hear it is a fuel pump instead!

I didn't know that. However I do know how supersticous (did I spell that right?) the old world Italians are as I have seen it in my family. Its almost laughable if they didn't take it so seriously.

    yes. Surtess In Monaco 1965 / 158 F1 s/n 0006.
it broke down from fuel in its last turn and it will be classified to 1 turn but 4 not 5.
