206's were all aluminum, 246 L had aluminum doors, trunk, and bonnet, and my 246 E I believe only has the bonnet in aluminum. So I have been thinking...

What is the aluminum weight saving L vs. E and 206 vs. E?

Would it be posible to build aluminum doors and other panels to replace the steel panels? How much would it cost? What about the whole body?

Am I crazy to even think about this?

    Cheers,

    Julio

Of course you could. Why? Are you going to race? There could be measurable weight savings (depends on the gauge of the metal used) but at the cost of some strength (dent resistance).

Possibly, but then maybe one has to be a bit crazy to own one of these cars!

Needless to say, it would be very, very expensive. An educated guess for the weight savings on door "skins" and 2 decklids would be less than 40 kg. (or well under 3%).

I wonder what became of Scaglietti's original body-forming "bucks"...

There was a 328 rebodied in all aluminum, so yes, it can (and has) been done. I have no clue on pricing, but it's probably in the OUCH! territory.

Of course, when the weight reduction is significant, you need to start playing around with spring rates, ride height, etc.

I think carbon body would be far cheaper. That would be cool, too! No nostargic value.. I guess..

The best way to improve the car's performance characteristics is to change out the person in the driver's seat. :)

    Nice idea though.

I drove that aluminum 328. Flew to Chicago to see it. Road very well BUT the car was weighed and actually weighed about the same as the steel car! Worse, the crisp lines of the 328 were not as evident. Whoever did the body did it well but not as nicely as the original. Food for thought before embarking on such a project.
