38 mins in... when does the good stuff start?
Little sprint through San Francisco should be happening now. I never would have survived in that era with cars with so much under-steer.
yeah, that started at 65mins, they were out of the SF area at 68:30. not bad, a few bits that were obviously sped-up, and 4 scenes in a row with the same green beetle wtf??? (unless it was different angles of the same shot, not sure now). then it went until 72:30 with the bad guys at their fiery demise. so, 7 minutes of decent car-chase. certainly makes me want to go back and play Driver.
Be sure to count how many hubcaps come off the car chasing him, I think it's like 7.. http://www.moviemistakes.com/film224
Its a study in cool. Lt. Bullitt doesn't take any #$@# from anyone and then like the admiral says its the build-up and music before the chase. The sound of that fastback starting up, and moving out is cool. And miss bissett and her old porsche are nice. San Fran makes a nice movie backdrop just as in basic instinct.
When you watch old movies like BULLITT and older movies pay attention to things about society and how they have changed, like cars, clothes, habits, and prices. People in older movies are much leaner, the general public, no fatso's. Also, and it is almost comical, look at how the ambulance crew cares for the shot cop. They show up in a meat wagon, like a delivery truck, they put the wounded on a REAL canvas stretcher and then carry the guy sloppy and slow to the meat wagon. Just a couple of monkeys with no training and no equipment. Times have changed and old movies have that extra element of entertainment.
The pace of life was slower then, so people were less inclined to get fast food. Also, the family unit was stronger and there were more home cooked meals, using less processed ingredients. People also had more physically active lifestyles - kids didn't spend all their time playing videogames and sitting on the computer.
Yeah, it's funny to watch 70's detective shows, 'Cannon' was a favorite - drove a big-ass LTD, but they dubbed in sound from like a Pinto or Cortina or something whenever William Conrad was in a chase scene. I also liked how the tires always screeched around corners - when they were on dirt roads or in dirt parking lots.
Cannon's car was a MkIII Lincoln, I think. I remember seeing Bullitt in the theater when it came out. Still watch it almost every time it comes on the tube.
Oi!! I saw it at the drive-in ..... you won't remember them either also for sound buffs, McQ with John Wayne barrelling around in the big old Transam from (poor) memroy , now that had the nicest sounding V8 ever
Cannon, aka FATMAN, did drive a MK III and those were nice. He also had a phone in it decades before cell phones. Barnaby Jones was also a great show. Even buddy ebsen used to screech to a halt when he was just picking up a case of geritol. McQ was a great movie with a cool sounding car. But the car that had class was McGarrett's big black square mercury in the last few years. All these guys always stopped their cars by locking up. I guess they didn't care about flat spots.
Cannon- big man needs a big car I liked Rockford, alway had great chase scenes back when Cali was nice on the coast, he perfected the J turn as well Chips is funny to watch also Mandatory hubcaps falling off and massive body lean in corners with those old boats
