who has them? Heres mine. 1-Red Tin Foil Barb 1-Bala Shark 4-RB Pacu (I know, I'm ready for it) 1-Common Pleco (not pictured) 1-Tiger Oscar (not pictures) I know a lot of you guys have some incredible fish tanks.
I know we have a thread here somewhere already.....Stupid questions, but fake or real plants? Wife wants me to put live plants in our 100gal freshwater, but I don't know....Maybe in our 12gal eclipse tank... My 100gal has: 1 Yellow Lab Cichlid 2 Zebra Cichlids 3 Convict Cichlids 1 Angelfish(BabyFace) 1 Bala The 12gal Eclipse has only 1 AngelFish(Capone) Wife has one of those small little tanks for a desktop Beta. I need to buy more bigger rocks to fill out the 100gal. It's cool seeing the Cichlids move the base gravel around for their shelter.....
Man, you have picked some tough guys. My favorite, the Astronotus ocellatus (sic) (Oscar) is about as rambunctious as it gets. Cichlids traditionally move things around. Oscars will destroy any plants you put in. But, they are wonderful. Depending on how mature your fish are, try some of the plants your wife suggests. If they make a war zone out of things, you'll know what to do. After that, they'll give you both a lot of pleasure. 100 gallons. Ooh, better than television. Cheers.
Forgot about the beta. Males will make an attempt to destroy every living thing in their path. That's why you see them as solos in offices. A good sparing partner for Piranhas. Nasty little devils.
I have a 20gallon with: 1-electric blue crayfish 1-albino something or other shark 1-garani(sp?)(used to have two but one died) and a crab until it climbed out of the tank and i found it mummified a month later. I am really starting to enjoy them actually and am planning on getting those minitaure stingrays when i get some extra$$.
You have one or you like the one in the picture? He is VERY gentle, however is the king of the tank. Sets a good example! The plants are all fake. Real ones are just another PITA thing to maintain. That tank is a 55g, however I am moving them to a 500g pretty soon...
take a look at ReefCentral for some very impressive Saltwater tanks...One guy who built a 10000gal in his living room, lol. I just picked the cichlids because of their bright colors and how active they are. The one angel fish in that tank really holds his own though, lol. I'm looking to add more cichlids soon, but want more rocks for them to play around. I'd love saltwater, but don't want to add to much more until I get out of this apartment, especially since I'm not supposed to own anything over 10gal. Management doesn't mind since we have insurance and they just like me....But I'm definately looking forward to the day when I can get a 500gal and even a 100gal. I'd love to have a shark(Bonnethead or Blacktip), but I know I'd never have the proper facility to raise one, nor the skills....Just a James Bond dream, lol. Though I'd settle with a semi-aggressive tank with sand base for rays and live coral with clowns and puffers.
real plants will make for a much better environment for the fish - and it's all about the fish - not the fact that real plants can be a PITA - but I have them and they are not a pain at all. Sure, you have to net out some floating 'leafs' once in awhile, but plastic plants suck - if you are a fish.
The issue I have encountered is my fish tearing them out of the ground and shreding them up and them getting clogged in the filter. I feed my fish crickets, worms, tetramin pro, and do weekly water changes. I care about the fish, however in a 55g tank, with very messy breeds of fish, real plants are not practical. surely in my 500, but not in my 55.
I've had a few aquariums, right now only have a 75 gallon, and it's empty, because we were living in a hotel while my new house was finished. I've had oscars, discus, plecos, clown loaches, bala sharks, etc. My first fish were PIRANHA! Got them as fry, and fed them bacon to start. Once they got to live food, it was so mesmerizing. My favorites though were my two silver arowana and a freshwater leopard stingray. That's right, FRESHWATER STINGRAY. And an axolotl, also known as a water dog. Named him Fido. Has anyone seen these for sale anywhere? They dissappeared off the market a few years ago and I never found out why.
I don't think I do. He's asleep now and I ain't riskin' the late night festivities by waking him up to take 'em!
I was looking into a 200gal tank so I can buy 2 freshwater stingrays, but I don't want to hassle with the sand base again...I had that before and it was such a PITA to clean in a apartment. Maybe if I was on the first floor, since that would be easier to filter and clean the sand outside. Careful though if you have pleco's in the tank with rays, I heard that sometimes, they'll try "cleaning" the ray.... I too am concerned with live plants in my tank...Mainly because of my Cichlids though, since they like to dig crap up. Can anyone recommend a good freshwater forum? ReffCentral is primarily salt...
