I am sure they have a pretty good idea what the motors will take. I have no idea what F1's rules are but if they are like other sanctioning bodies the motor guys will be able to do enough diagnostic work to determine if there is a problem with out breaking FIA's seals on the motor.

And then there is always the first session. If it even hiccups then Kimi will get a motor and take the starting hit rather than chance a DNF.

I guess the cooling system would count as part of the engine that can't be touched in between the races so if that's the case Kimi might have to start with a new engine in Malaysia. I'd rather have him lose points now than later in the season.

we don't know exactly where this leak was--if it necessitates engine replacement along with the fix...but even with new engine and a drop in starting grid, he should still be fighting for the podium presuming he qualifies well...

from what i read, the engine wasn't damaged, but i think there was just a leak somewhere. i hope they get things sorted out. Malaysia is no place to expect some kinda miracle to happen. the weather will be as hot as hell durin raceday.

what do these seals look like?
Are they like the seals on a notebook computer?

    Anyone have pics?

I believe the seals only affect the engine block and its internals as well as cams and valves for some reason. I may be making it up but for some reason but I think that oil systems and cooling as well as clutches etc are fair game to replace.

Wouldn't it be dangerous for all drivers not to fix the leak?

Lol, sealed simply means that the teams are not allowed to change anything inside certian parts of the engine such as the valves, pistons, cams and other items stated below. However I'm not sure the extent of what can and can't be touched.

The cooling system can certainly be changed out between races (radiators, coolant lines to and from the engine). All the teams will be running a different cooling set-up for the hotter races. I'd also imagine that they're running with an electric H2O pump rather than one that's driven off the engine. I could be wrong on that note.

As said, servicing has to be allowed. Changing clutches, gearing or entire gear boxes. The seals will be on the heads and oil pans, possibly the valve trains. It cannot prevent normal servicing.

The rule is to prevent engine changes or rebuilds, not to require 50,000 mile service intervals.
