So is this the way to put the near final nail in the coffin of the SW Ontario North American auto industry? Has Buzz Hargrove commented from the penthouse suite at the Four Seasons?

It just seemed kind of "sudden" and unfair (?)

I guess I just can't bear any more smugness from people in Priuses.

Priuses are garbage. They're ugly, they get worse mileage than advertised and the majority of the people who drive them are hippies anyways. Give me a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla with a 5 speed and we'll see who saves more money in the end.

I think the main thing is there is some choice...whether or not you like the Prius or the Lexus400H, something needs to be done. If Ford built there buisness based on selling hungry SUVs and taking a hit....too bad.
No different when the Jap cars in the early 80s...Hondas and Toyotas were nothing but rust buckets...too bad.
People in North AMerica need to start working together, not shipping things oversees just because its easier.
I lkike the new proposal with the taxes.
An Fcar/Lcar should be hit with the equivlent based on %.

Some of us here in the States are a bit slow, eh. But, it seems to me that the F-car driven a few hundred miles per year is nowhere near as polluting or energy wasting as an SUV or a heavy pickup driven 20,000 Km per year at 140Km/hr everyday. That is certainly what happens here. Aside from revenue, I think these taxes have little effect.

How can the government possibly curb greenhouse emissions when 250,000 new people arrive in this country every year??????

Maybe if they would stop inflating the population and consumption, we would be better off...

There is something in what everyone has said. We all make up the whole, and each can do something to contribute. I've been conserving all my life, eh. Not from any altruism but, because I am a miser and want the most for the least. I waste nothing if I can help it.

In choosing a vehicle, aside from a Ferrari, look at the kind of driving you do regularly. If it is in or a short drive to a city, buy a hybrid. Like me, if you do mostly highway, you will find that a hybrid will do poorly against some of the conventional cars in Km/L. Cut down on the speed. None of us needs to go 140Km/hr all the time. Taxing everyone to death will not reduce pollution and it will not reduce perceived global warming. Reasoned use will.

I am not Canadian, and have no right to tell you what you should do. Nonetheless, I think the discussion is useful. Very best.

Next thing you know, they will try and ban snowmobiles/ski-doos in Canada.....!

And shortly afterwards the next Canadian civil war will begin....:D:D
