Anyone know what it does? Looks like it connects to the Motronic box...but which one? 2.7 or 5.2? Doesn't look like it comes with a manual (one is not pictured).
Doesnt say which one. They don't come with a manual. Break out boxes are handy if you use them lots and I really don't know any one in the car business that does. By the time you are down to that method you have used up a lot of resources. Anything you can do with one you can do without one with just a little more trouble. Ferrari made them for almost everthing and system since the 328/TR period and charged stupid money for them. Another one of those things that got shoved down the dealers throats like the $10,000 torque wrench.
RD is right. You don't want this if you are a shop on a time schedule. But if you are a DIY'er this can be a great tool. It goes between the ecu and the car's connector to provide probable access to each ECU pin. But it is only valuable if you have the pinout readings for your ECU. OTOH you can make a pinout table by constructing one when the car works. While not as accurate as having Ferrari specs it does get you in the ballpark. You can also do a digital trace and store it from an oscilloscope and that can help you diagnosis bad signals from sensors. With these two items you can do just about what a ferrari tester will do but taking a lot more time and thought but at a fraction of the cost. The Ferrari testor like SD2 is just a dumb box that points you to the right direction and sometimes fingers the exact problem right off the bat in about 1 minute!
Hmmmmm, for that price I just may bid on it. You can never have too many tools. I'll take my chances and hope it's for a 2.7
looks like it's for a 5.2 from the response to the question and answer section "Ferrari Part No. is 95970072 Its for 5.2 F355, either model F1 or manual"
From my experience in the workshop, we rarely use them. As has been mentioned before, the factory issued lots of these on automatic order to dealers, weather they wanted them or not. We have a pile of them in a cupboard.Great piece of kit if you like to collect dust! Sensor readings can just as easily be taken from the sensor plug or the motronic plug, a B.O.B should never be considered as a substitute for an SD2.
True but VOM measurements are often required to perform the diagnosis, the SD2 really just points you in a direction. Its just that those measurements are almost as easy without the BOB as with one.
