One of the Fchatters asked me an interesting question which I wouldn't have been able to answer if I had not taken the cluster apart this weekend so I thought I would let everyone know:

The poster mentioned that his dash lights were dead and was told by a dealer that he needed to replace the cluster (as opposed to replacing the "bulbs")... In opening the cluster, please note that the dials are not illuminated by bulbs but are illuminated by ribbon with metal strips that illuminate.

I'm not a mechanic by ANY means but it would seem that replacing the cluster is not the only resort if you could simply replace this ribbon....

Could someone like Rifle please comment to help this fellow FChatter?

    Joe

    Joe,

I would think that the ribbons are fiber optic like optical digital audio cables that transmit light from a distant source.

It's possible that there are a few remotely mounted LED's that provide the light source and the ribbons then transmit the light energy to the respective dials.

I'll check this when I pull my dash apart very soon, but I'd bet this is the issue, and similar to the F1 indicator problem some 355 owners have experienced, there is always a way to repair the source.

As we discovered with the alarm module, Ferrari does not like to make repair items available. They want you to purchase the whole module for a tidy sum rather than make $80.00 worth of batteries available as Bruce has done.

How do those gauges now look illuminated at night?

Gauges look awesome at night. The yellow gauge looks really crazy because it almost has a flourescent look because the back lighting is resonating through a much lighter, yellow dial....makes it look like the tach is flourescent green. pretty cool stuff.

You guys ready to make the move??

    Joe

Great to know. They do look stunning.

I have made a deal with Craig to distribute the dials, and there will be introductory FChat discounts available.

Let me know and I can send a form to all who want them.

The illumination is actaully an EL light source flat ribbon . Electro Luminesence..

You can google this and see that there are kits out there that you can adapt. The F one plugs into the left side.

These would be relatively easy to produce.

I have one of these clusters pulled apart and for the life of me I can't figure out what is wrong. The EL strip seems fine and when measured with a meter and then hooked up to a test set it seems fine. Also the transistors and transformer that feed the strip seem ok? Does anyone have any contacts at Digi-Tek that could get us a schematic or the EL strips?

    Thanks

    Steve

Joe, I was going to but the car was in Norwoods for some other stuff so they popped them on they said Craigs estimate of a half hour was about right. I did not know till they got the cluster out that the gages are not really analog but sit on the surface of a small computer that digitally controls the gage pin actuation pretty clever.

Ironically Greg when I bought my 355 some luatic had replaced the radio with a spring loaded cup holder and coin tray needless to say it was replaced quickly, but dont those carpets look great the next interior add that I am headed towards is the Harmony Auto Sports seat with red ribs on tan.

I told you. Our cup holder replaces the ashtray and looks OEM.

You can save the $ by sending your seats to a person in LA who is the Ferrari leather expert. He can do that for you for less $ and you'll still have the OEM seats. He can even match the red!

BTW, the gauges look great. I sell those, too!

d Greg I id not know that you did, are you distributing for Craig or are they another manufacturer? I looked at the Harmony seat as well as Sparco and the weight saving is 40lbs a seat over the original electric seats.

I work with Craig. He's not a bad guy regardless of what anyone says!

The Harmony seats are beautiful but a big investment to make w/o actually sitting in them.

Agree with Greg that the mats look TERRIFIC! But, I think the next replacement for you is that nasty rubber dead pedal!! Replace it with aluminum ASAP! :)
