The production cost of any automobile is a very well held secret. The only numbers that ever make it into the public relm are estimates by market analyists.

Knowing what their cost is on various items I would bet parts and labor not including company administration costs, equipment depreciation, etc It's probably on the order of 20% of the retail price. Maybe less.

Maybe slightly off topic, but if you haven't yet watched National Geographic's 'Ultimate Factories' special on Ferrari, do. It doesn't give you numbers, but it walks you through the build process for one of the GT cars, the 599. Fascinating show.

Once in the 80ties a friend of a Jaguar executive asked if he could buy a Jag at cost price, "sure" was the answer, "that'll be an extra 5000!"

That is a neat program. Seen it 2X. (was it on the History channel??). They said that it is one of the most preferred co's to work for in Italy. The only thing I thought was strange, there are trees inside growing because it provides the "proper" humidity for engine building.....Whaaaaaat? Anyone got an explanation for this one? Please!!

Personally I'm impressed if the cost of an Enzo is only 200K. The cost of a tail light lens is not just the few cents worth of plastic and the few seconds to form the lens. It also includes the design, analysis, development and testing, the fabrication of the tooling to form the lens, any certification testing, paperwork, etc. Same for a windshield, or a fender.
If you're making Dodge Neons, spreading all those costs over a million cars means the cost per car is peanuts.
If you're making 400 Enzos, that means all that development and tooling gets spread over just 400 cars (plus a few spare parts). Plus you have to certify them for safety and emissions -- crash tests, etc.
