Thinking of selling my 3.2 Mondial Cab. Any advice?

I live in Northern California, and I'm thinking of selling my 1986 (Built December 1985) Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet. I've heard of so many potential problems with selling cars, I was wondering...should I consign it with a dealer, put it on Ebay, use an escrow service, or just advertise in FerrariAds and sign over the pink slip after I get the cashier's check? Any help would be appreciated.

I've used cars.com and eBay before, both positive experiences (Mercedes and a Porsche). Both times were cashier's (bank) checks and it turned out fine. An escrow service probably isn't a bad idea, though.

What else you do depends on how urgent it is that you sell, and whether you want top dollar, a reasonable deal or a fire sale price.

 

It is not urgent. I have heard of forged cashier's checks. How do you protect against those?

 

Not sure there's a completely safe way, but some ideas for you:

Go to the buyer's bank to complete the exchange of keys/title/cashier's check. Get the cashier's check there. I like doing transactions in banks because we're on camera, and the cashier's check is fresh.

Photocopy his and your drivers' licenses and have a notarized purchase agreement signed by both of you. If something goes awry with the payment, and things go bad, this will stand up in court. You can print a usable agreement from sites like cars.com. It's one page, very simple.

Use an escrow service as you suggest, although I have not done this in the past. When I buy from dealers, I wire the money. Having the buyer wire money into escrow is probably the safest.
