So I always have wondered when you buy a $200,000+ Ferrari 430 or a $120,000+ Porsche 911 Turbo why is it the porsche needs nearly none of the upkeep as the Ferrari, but still performs closely if not the same. Even for the 360 and the 911 S.

What is it with Audi owners !

For the same reason you paid extra to get an Audi not the VW (or Seat or Skoda) which is basically the same car

Ultimately each company's mindset about what's important, the intended use, relative production volumes (5000 versus 100,000), etc all play a factor in the differences. Might as well ask why some women are higher maintenance than others ;).

Why does the girl next door perform almost as well as a supermodel, yet cost far less to maintain?!

Remember it's not always about speed but as far as Ferrari goes it's the:
    The design:
    The engineering behind it:
    The reputation:
    The racing reputation:
    The history:
    The racing history:
    The records that it holds:
    The prestige:
    The popularity:
    The sexyness:
The how people turn their head when you drive by:
    and most important,
The way that makes you feel when you're driving it

Because anybody can get the girl next door. If one doesn't see the point in going after the supermodel, then they're not for you.

why is it that every other week, there appears a new thread about A Vs B...about how car A cost x amount more than car B yet they both are close in speed/performance, etc, etc, etc...

in every mag correspondence section, every month, there's always at least one person who submits:
'this car is faster than that one, but costs half as much' ...

it sooooo old already...lame lame lame!!!

When major car magazines do comparison tests that include both the Ferrari F430 and the Porsche 911 Turbo, they always pick the Ferrari as being the most fun to drive. And, isn't that the main reason for owning such a car?

So, the answer to the question of why a $200k FCar requires more maintenance than a $120k PCar is... it's not as high of a priority in
Maranello as it is in Stuttgart. Different design goals.

it's not that simple...and it's not a matter of 'priority'...there are factors that have to do with production numbers and numerous other things...

Go and look at the price of a 997 turbo and a F430. The 997 is not half the price of the F430. Then take your 997 turbo/F430 or 996turbo/F360 for a service and compare the prices. They are not the worlds apart that Porsche and Ferraris were back in the 60's 70's and 80's.

Now, what was the question again? ;)

Sure they are, my Porsche Turbo 30k service was $800, including new spark plugs. Oil changes (11 qts of Mobil 1) are $99.

Porsches are great stepping stones to the more exotic brands and great fun to drive.

My yearly service on my 02 911 TT was around $500, I think. Does that compare favorably with a F430's service?

Another cost of ownership factor, and one that makes service costs look insignificant, is depreciation. Compare the resale value of each after two years, and you'll see if you can buy an F430 at MSRP, it will cost much less to own than the Turbo. MUCH less.

Perhaps one point is that the usual girl next door does not beat their maid half to death with a cell phone while high on the snort?

June Cleaver could have been a supermodel too - before she had the beaver.

Two points...how many people can GET an F430, or the latest, greatest, depreciation proof Ferrari?

Secondly...my wife serves me dinner AND acts as sex-kitten. Sounds like you guys choose the wrong wives. :D

I just think it comes down to to three things for me. The Ferrari 430 looks better, sounds better, and is more fun to drive. Though the Porsche may be close in level of performance, it's just not what a Ferrari is. Not that a Porsche 911 is bad, it's just not a Ferrari. The people that buy a 430 are probably not even considering getting a 911 because they view it as a completely different car, or they already had one and want something different.

It's also about a mass produced car vs a hand built low production car.
When was the last time that you saw a Porche on the road ?(daily), now when was the last time that you saw a Ferrari on the road ?.(a couple annually)

    Exactly.
To beable to get an F430 at MSRP you will have thrown a lot of "love" at that dealer for a number of years for that privilege......

Face it....A Ferrari is just way cooler....period....'nuff said.
