I'd like to think I'm pretty knowledgable when it comes to the computer, but I'm completely stumped.

When I double-click on the program it opens and all I have is a new document and the ruler. I don't even have File, Edit, View, Insert, Help, etc. at the top. There are NO taskbars either. I know the shortcuts, but that doesn't work for everything, nor is the owner of the computer skilled enough to remember/use them. I tried the help section, but the first thing it tells me to do is go to File. THERE IS NO "FILE," THAT'S WHY I NEED HELP! LOL :D

I have a disk with Microsoft Word on the way, so I may just have to uninstall and reinstall it. I would like to avoid having to do so if possible.

Fortunately, this is not MY computer, just one a family member has asked me to take a look at... UNfortunately, I haven't the slightest clue as to how to fix it and I've spent a lot of time trying to do so.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

When you're in Word try hitting Alt and the down arrow. Did you see anything pop up? If not, you may need to repair the Office installation. You can do that by going to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs then find Microsoft Office and click Remove then there will be an option to Repair.

Just add the toolbars back in. Right click at the top > toolbars.

I will have to try both later, I'm at work now. I plan to hop on F-chat once I'm on that computer and pull up this thread and pray that something works.

I know that someone was trying to upgrade Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. and something went wrong installing the updates and it's been whacko since. I also removed Word tried a customized installation and got the same result. I'm wondering if that version is just kinda screwy.

I tried everything. I tried to pull things left and right while holding down the mouse. Right click, left click, scream, Ctrl + every key, all the "F" keys... nothing!

Could it possibly be hidden at the bottom of the page? Hidden by the tray?

No, I'd have to look at it again, but I'm 99.9% sure that I would've noticed that while working on it.

It's such a bizarre error, I just don't get it. I'm such a guy when it comes to this stuff. It drives me NUTS if I can't repair something like this. Haha...

Try this... Close Word and Outlook (and anything else that uses Word).

Find the file Normal.dot, rename it to Normal.old

Reopen Word, which will recreate the Normal Template. This template has the default settings.

I uninstalled everything and then reinstalled using the new disks and I was still having the same problem. I was ready to tear my hair out until I clicked the link that you provided and after playing around with a few things I was able to resolve the issue. Thank you SO much. :D
