Have you guys seen this. Go to google and type in your phone number in the search bar and hit enter. It will give out the name and address of the person the number is assigned to and will even link to Mapquest. It is possible to block it from being used but takes 24-48 hours for the block to become effective.

We had our number blocked. I was shocked to enter my mothers phone number out in west Texas and find out her name, address and a map to her house. I do not think this is something I like very much.

To try it, you must type in your full number, example: 555-432-9876.

    What do you guys think?

So... what's the effectual difference between that and having a phone book from the library (and many libraries have books from many cities across America) and a map? Sure, it's very easy now, but it's nothing that wasn't public before.

With online databases like LexisNexis anyone with a subscription can see your marriage or divorce records, your voter registration, all of your recorded mortgages (with tax assessments), any mechanic, tax or judgment liens on your property, your business/corporation filings, professional licenses, pleadings and records for any criminal or civil lawsuits you are a party to... phone number is the least of your worries! :D After all, these are all public record - however the internet just makes them really convenient to get, since you don't have to physically go to the courthouse, city hall or county offices to get them.

PS: Bank statements are also considered public record for evidentiary purposes too.

How would bank statements be evidentiary purposes (I guess an offshore bank account would provide protection)? Would private business (if you own on) information be private? Tax returns are private.

Well, anytime you needed to prove there was or wasn't certain monies in the account.

Not if the court agreed with your lawyer they should be discovered. You would need an exception for the documents, such as attorney-client privilege. Perhaps not surprisingly, many corporate defense litigators spend a lot of time figuring out how to get their client's incriminating or liability-creating documents covered by privileges.

What I find to be more of a problem personally are poorly administered criminal background check records. I spent a summer living in DFW in 2005, and apparently there is someone in Tarrant County with my name who stole a car like 5 years ago. It shows up on Telecheck identity services.

I found this out because on at least 3 occasions since 2005 (when moving into a new apartment), I have been initially denied our housing application because they say I appear to have a felony... then I have to go through the schpiel about this other guy and his Telecheck report, a different social security, different eye color, and is recorded as being like 2 years younger, 3 inches shorter, 120 lbs lighter than me. He was probably also not a law student/lawyer. Then the apartment management lady says, "Hmm... yeah. I suppose you're right."

Thanks. Your only taking in regards to court precedings. But they are not "public" information in the sense of home values, addresses, ect.

In a civil/divorce case, you can attempt to get the records and information sealed, correct? I believe Greg Norman's divorce case was "sealed".

In regards to the addresses and such, it's nothing that you can't find out. I don't see anything "new" information that isn't public already.

Photo.net put all my info up in Google. Oh, well. Anyone can search my name in Google & find my publications, illustrations, photographs, etc. I did while working for the Feds for 10 years.

When I put my moms number in and it gave me her address and a map to her house I began thinking about predators and how easy it is becoming to find out where someone lives even when they will not tell you. Now if I were 21 and at a bar and gave my number to a person of the opposite sex and she found me through Google I would probably think she was pretty cool. But if she did that it would probably end up being a case of "very possessive behavior".............
