A friend just sent me an email to gauge interest in cars by asking for a top 15 list of cars I would love to drive and then a list of cars that the average individual should drive. I tried for as much diversity as possible. Originally I had more Ferraris on the list but I then honed them down to make other marque additions.

Its an arbitrary list and very difficult to hone down. Here is a quick list I came up with:

    automotive enthusiasts
    1964 427 sc Cobra
    1955 Jaguar D type
    1963 Ferrari 250 GTO
    1986 Porsche 959
    1955 Ford Thunderbird
1963 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing
    1968 Lamborghini Muira
    1968 Corvette L-88
    1954 Maserati A6GCS
    1933 Duesenburg J Indy Special
1972 Porsche 917 (Mark Donahue car)
    1938 Alfa Romeo 2900b Berlinetta
    1966 Chaparral 2E
    1995 McLaren F1 LM
    2006 Ferrari P4/P5

    For the common man
    1949 Delahaye 175 MS
    1963 Ferrari Lusso 250 GT
    2007 Rolls Royce Phantom
    1968 Lamborghini Muira
    1931 Duesenburg J Convertible Coupe
    1938 cord 812 SC Coupe
    1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible
    1968 Corvette L88
1972 Ferrari 365 gtb Daytona Convertible
1963 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing
    1964 Jaguar E Type
    1964 Shelby 427 SC Cobra
    2007 Covette Z06
    1955 Ford Thunderbird Convertible
2007 Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren roadcar

From either list he or she would have to be a good driver. Some of those cars are not to 'user friendly' there. 250 GTO would be an interesting experience...

Um Ken, the average American "common man" can't even drive a stick and wouldn't have a clue how drive most of the cars on your "common man" list.

The average individual in America drives a Camry or Accord!

I should have thought this post a little deeper prior to submitting. I was asked the question by a friend associated with a car museum and a large media outlet. He wanted 2 lists. One from an automotive enthusiasts viewpoint and then an enthusiast list for the non auto enthusiast.

I approached my first 15 by thinking of my favorite, rare cars that I would love to hear see and feel. Obviously, it would be next to impossible to actually gather a physical experience with all the mentioned vehicles. Of both lists, I have seen each car with the sole exception of the Chaparral. I have been in a couple and driven a couple.

For the enthusiast list made for the non car person, I tried to think of cars that represented genres. A Delahaye to represent the wild French custom bodied vehicles, a Duesy to show that period, an E type for the classic British Sports car, and so on.

In the end, a list is a list and really means nothing. Its an esoteric exercise that really means nothing. I thought it would be interesting to get others opinions on what they would like to drive and then what cars they would like to introduce to non car people.

    regards

    Ken

Duesenberg convertible coupe SJ model (supercharged 8 cylinder) that is the best right there.

the fact that most americans drive auto accords etc makes me sad, I drive an auto ford haha. But I can drive a stick and I have owned manual sports cars and plan to keep doing so (they suck for city driving though)

Just for the sake of accuracy Gullwings were discontinued in 1957. The roadster was built from that date to 63.

Thanks for the correction. I realized that after putting my list together. I was going by this lovely 63 Roadster I shot last year that had disk brakes and an aluminum block. I forgot that the Gullwings had stopped production in 57.

    cheers

Hey!! I'm on your common man list. But then my company there is driving SLRs and Phantoms. My common man list would include a F150, Cobalt, Accord and Lacross.
