I'm kinda jumping off a post on a hotrod board, but it's something I don't think I've seen here. What is the lifespan of a seat belt? We're running around in cars 20-30 years old. Should we be looking for a replacement belts, and if so, where might we find them?
On the track, FIA are 5 years and SFI are 2, or at least as best can remember that is what SCCA says. So yes, those 20+ year old stock belts may be far from optimum. Of course you can get the webbing replaced for new.
Agreed, but with Fia belts they must stand a lot higher speeds/impacts and stress factors. I have some 83 Mondial Qv belts if anyone needs some
FWIW... I recently forced my daughter to take a AAA safety class and I attended with her out of mercy. As it turned out, of course, we were the only ones there voluntarily. The rest were all traffic court convicts of dubious integrity serving time in the class for leniancy and all the while complaining bitterly about speed traps in Virginia. Anyway, our paripatetic instructor, for whatever bizarre reason, made a point of cautioning us about the integrity of seat belts in used cars. He made no mention of age, but did claim these devices were designed for "one-time use". So, if said vehicle had been in at least one accident they must be replaced. Seamus
