Why is the F50 not as popluar as the other Super Ferraris?

I think the F50 is finally getting its due.
First time around I think people thought the car was perhaps ugly, definitely so compared to the 288 GTO and the functional beauty of the F40.

Only now is it being fully appreciated as being an amzing piece of engineering. An excellent chassis, with an excellent engine


Used prices (especially here in the UK) are strong (between £310,000-£350,000, when they do come up)

The 288 GTO was beauty
The F40 combined the beauty of form and function
The F50 was purely function and aesthetics may have come second.

This is a great philosophical question that has perplexed me for some time. To me the F50 has always been a dream car, I think its the best looking of the super Ferrari's. I know there were fewer F50s made than F40s or Enzos. How many 288 GTOs were there? Maybe its like the forgotten middle child?

I guess its like comparin a 250 gto to (F40) to a 250 California (F50)

anytime you come up against an F40 or a 250 gto you are going to lose

 

Try to find people actively seeking an F50.

Enzo threads and F40 threads always pop up. "Hey I'm looking for an Enzo/F40" threads are very common.

I would take a cali spyder over a GTO. I would take an F50 over any super ferrari. That is just my personal choice.

 

Hey Noah, I think there are a number of real buyers out there for F50s - will be interesting to see the "ask" for the next US car. I'd consider one that wasn't red or yellow - which limits the market just a wee bit!

The F50 is newer, far rarer, and has the open top, all of which will appeal to a number of folks.

 

I just find this whole situation weird. It seems as though people have just given up searching for one to buy. People won't sell them, but at the same time, people don't drive them that much. There are about 6 to 8 F50s within 50 miles of me. I have only seen 1. Most of these cars are low miles and don't get driven, yet the people won't sell it.

I agree, it will be interesting to see what the next US car will go for.

Hamann advertises a Euro car for $650, but I don;t really count that as an indication of the market. Heck, it might be a bargain.

I too hands down I choose the F50 over f40 and even the Enzo.
Back in 1995 when I first saw the F50 next to the F512M I feel in love with them both...
My wallet size though was only enough for the F512M..

i've loved the f-50 ever since i first saw it. it's just that wild, agressive styling that so differentiates itself from the f40 and 288gto. i think those that have them really do appreciate the beauty of it, which is exactly why it's next to impossible to find one for sale. if i had that kind of money floating around, i would pounce at the first f50 i saw

 

I love the F50. I have never driven one , yet, but i want one . They are so sexy.

I hope they will not go up too much !

 

There has been an F50 in the showroom at FCI in Greensboro for quite some time. Never for sale.

But anytime I'm there I always go over at look at it for a while... just wishing that one day one of the salesmen would allow me to take a seat (they certainly know my family and I enough to know I'm not going to damage anything)... but know it's never gonna happen because it is a privately owned vehicle.

If I could choose one that I had to keep (ie couldn't sell it to buy something else), the F50 it would be for me. It would really help me out a lot to have the mile+ of headroom, and it's just damn sexy, and naturally aspirated.

 

The F50 Barchetta has always been my favorite. Then again, I have a thing against turbo-charging in engine design (ala F40), so factor that into my opinions.

This last weekend our local FCA Club held its annual meeting in conjunction with three major Ferrari collections and I was able to see the F40, F50, and Enzo nearly next to each other.

In talking to the owner who is a serious driver, he stated that the F50 is regular and predictable to control when driving, while the F40 is a "wild child" that can really bite you should you not be paying attention.

In addition, the F50 was a technology platform to showcase (I believe) the first 5 valve engined Ferrari with a carbon fiber body. The body highlights the use of carbon fiber by leaving the weave texture in the paint. That is, the paint is not smooth and reflective but shows the carbon fiber cross-hatching so I'm sure that many folks are turned off by the asthetics. The F50 wing is the one area I was slow to warm up to though...

Many people are attracted to the F40 for its triple NACA ducts and styling, but I'm pre-disposed of that turbo-charging era.

The Enzo is an amazing performer but just doesn't hit my "Yes" button like the F50 does for technology, innovation and creativity.

I think part of the allure of the F40 is that it was the last car (let alone super F-car) that Enzo oversaw personally, and for the moment the Enzo is the "super-ist" of the Ferrari supercars. By no means am I saying that the F50 is the bastard child, but personally I feel like the other cars are simply more desierable. I think the styling on both the F50 and Enzo is a bit overdone, whereas the F40 is spartan and purpose built, and the 288 GTO was one of the more beautiful Ferraris ever manufactured. Maybe I'm biased because the F40 is my favorite car ever, but I dont find it surprising that the F50 isn't as sought after as some of the other Ferrari supercars.

 

The one in Greensboro has been there since last july at the very latest. I saw it while driving through town. I'm glad I've actually been able to see one in the flesh. Too bad the showroom was closed at the time of night we were driving through, but I never would have noticed it during the daytime sunlight.
