33 people including the shooter. this is driving me crazy. i wish we had a better idea of what makes these guys tick, it's just insane that someone would even think about doing something like this.

MSNBC is reporting it was a 24-year Chinese national who was not a VT student. He arrived through San Fran on a student visa. The reported that he made three earlier bomb threats to test the school's security system.

He's right! If campus security (or anyone other than the shooter) were armed, instead of relying on donut munchers who turn up 2.5 hrs late, or sending useless emails to the faculty, there wouldn't be 33 people dead...

This is the penalty for having a pacifist society.

There are often a multitude of reasons stemming back years into a person's childhood and upbringing. Years of repressed bitterness and frustration culminate in such violent acts.

Didn't Ted Bundy's wave of murders all start with him being rejected by his university girlfriend?

According to others in the hall of that dorm, the shooter was in an argument with his girlfriend. Killed her and the RA (resident assistant) when the RA came to try and settle things down. Supposedly she was cheating on him and then he went across campus to wait for the guy she cheated with. This isn't something new. People have been killed because they cheated on their husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend. The only thing I question with this is why the 30 other people?!?

So far I've found a list of 18 names of the people killed on facebook. It's really sad seeing the faces now and some of the pictures posted of them having a good time in college. :(

True it is in horrible taste, but someone on campus today did mention that, however it wasn't as disrespectful as that.

HUGE liability, and rightfully so. The campus should have been locked down/evacuated until they were certain the situation was safe. I boggle at how they arrived at the decision to leave the campus open for normal activity.

You know, taking your own life is one thing, but why take others with you? I hate hearing story like this because you never know when your time is up. One minute you are attending class and seconds later you are dead...

My Lord, damned Geraldo Rivera is saying all kinds of stuff about this Chiang fellow. I am losing more and more respect for that man every time I see his face on Fox.

Can't go anywhere for decent news these days.

As I suspected. Killing your girlfriend is a spur of the moment thing. Not 32 people over a period of several hours.

Interesting if it started with his girlfriend though. Sexual frustration / inadequecy has more potentional to set off incidents like this than just about any other grievance.

I just watched an MSNBC video and they said he was a Va-Tech student.

Also, to finally clear up the Chiang issue:

"I Want to Clear My Name"

    April 16, 2007 11:02 PM

    Richard Esposito Reports:

He is Asian, he lived in the dorm where the first shooting occurred and he recently broke up with his girlfriend -- he also happens to have a web blog packed with pictures in which he poses with firearms. On the Internet, Wayne Chiang is as good as convicted.

He has received 37,000 hits on his Web site over the past several hours, many containing death threats, he says.

"Right now pretty much the Internet thinks it is me, Chiang told ABC News. "I am just interested in trying to clear my name.

"It was five for five. I was Asian, I lived in (the dorm), I go to V Tech, I recently broke up with my girlfriend and I collect guns," Chiang, who initially contacted ABC affiliate KNXV.

Three separate federal sources have told ABC News that Chiang is not a suspect or a person of interest in their investigation.

A quick browse through his Web site, however, makes the coincidence that has triggered the avalanche of email to his site almost understandable. Chiang posts pictures of his H&K semi-automatic weapons, poses draped in at least a half dozen Russian rifles, and shows himself looking down the sights of another weapon. He also recounts his recent breakup with another Virginia Tech student.

"I am a federally licensed firearms collector," Chiang said. He said that numerous media organizations had told him he was a person of interest in the investigation but that no authorities had contacted him. Nor had he contacted any authorities.

The Chantilly, Va., resident is passionate about his right to bear arms, concealed weapons included. And thinks that carrying them on campus is OK.

"I am a firm believer that if Virginia tech students were allowed to conceal carry this situation could have ended sooner."

I was a student of VT for the past two year, and am technically still enrolled. However I was not at the school during the time of the shooting because I decided to take this year off, and then transfer to school in California, as I have been getting my business up and running in California. However as you can imagine many of my friends are still at the school so I have been hearing first hand accounts of what happened. I don't want to go into details, or place blame without knowing all the facts, except there is one issue I would like to raise. The school did not take the proper course of action and their string of excuses now is making me livid. This is the way many things are carried out at this school. Any excuses that how could they have known or prepared is non sense. They had multiple instinces to practice. This is nobody's fault, and probably could not have been stopped or prevented, however the school did not step up and take the necessary steps to at least try. Very upsetting for myself and my friends, who lost 32 of our fellow Hokies yesterday.

Please keep the school and everyone inolved in your prayers, even the poor soul who could have commited such an act.

Aside from our prayers for all VT Hokies, let's wait until all the facts are in before we pontificate. I quit watching the coverage at 7AM EDT. I started at 4:30 EDT and haven't learned much new. The highlight was watching the totally uninformed Mr. Rivera relentlessly badger the VT president. I'm waiting for some facts.
