Can it be used as a mild daily driver? Is it reliable? I like the look of it much better than that Flying Spur thing which is more of a rebodied Audi/VW... we are thinking of dumping our Quattroporte, just way to many problems...

chase stay from those cars my dad has a phantom its no good lots of headaches, i have an S550 its amazing, not the ambiance but the ride is unreal and the night vision camera and pano roof are pretty cool and with the amg sport package it looks pretty cool too. voice activated radio and navi are incredibly easy to use, the bentley could only dream of those features. I drive houston to dallas and the car is sitll half full great fuel consumption. So is austin still going to stay with you in san diego this summer? The phantom is supposed to have dream ride capability, well it is a dream ride when the suspension doesn't drop the back end on the ground, happened TWICE under warranty car has around 7k miles, my dad iloves mine and is thinking of the new s65 instead but like your parents he really wants the prestige mercedes doesn't offer in big cities haha.

Really? He is pretty much decided he wants a "big bentley" so I am looking at the Arnage and the Flying Spur, I MUCH prefer the Arnage, but if they really break all the time we will go for the Spur. He is just fed up with the QP breaking all the time and will no go for another temperamental car.

as far as i know, so long as you don't go off and put 1k miles a week on one, you should be fine. but, they are british, when they do break, unfortunately they break hard, and expensively.

that one's pretty nice. brand new they are about 240 for an arnage. i've seen 01 arnages go for as low as 100k in dealerships, so it can get pretty low.

Are they know for breaking often? He would be putting low miles on it, but the QP doesn't get many miles on it and things manage to break. Just last week the cable inside the drivers door snapped and it wouldn't unlatch, took forever to get that part from Italy to, such a pain.

Ouch, it's amazing how hard they drop.

I wouldn't go used on these because the warranty is huge I think Bentley is 3 year unlimited mile so an '05 that was built in '04 is almost out if it isn't already out of warranty. Small things hurt, they won't kill someone whose already paying 170K but if you pay 170K then 20K in a quick fix, you might as well have just paid 190K. Im serious, when my dad got the shocks fixed on his phantom under warranty it was in the neighborhood of 16K for just the backend.

As far as Arnages go if you were to buy a used one make sure its '02 or better if you notice there's a huge price gap between '02 and '01 thats because the '02 is when they were taken over by volkswagen and the cars gained alot of reliability....well alot more than '01 and earlier. Hell a '99 arnage was offered to me w/ 500 miles not that long ago for 65K. It just isn't something alot of people want. I would tell you to try to get an Arnage T '02 or '02 ones are low 100K and those are amazing machines, the front looks mean and they have nearly 700 lb/ft of torque.

It really sucks typically you'd say o who cares if it breaks under warranty, but I don't know how the bentley/Rolls dealer in Cali is, but here in houston, he told my dad that insurance companies laughed at the idea of having them give out loaner bentleys and rolls to customers getting their cars serviced and when that happens you can't really give your customers an '07 camry because some bigtime executives just aren't going to roll one until their phantom is ready and you get angry customers. Now most people with a bentley or rolls have other nice cars but most do not, They're usually quick to fix problems on these cars in houston just because theirs not many, but im sure in San Diego you could be looking at 1 week+. My mom has an '05 SL600 and its in the shop quite often, and MB dealer here takes eternity to just diagnose because of how many cars they've got coming in all the time and once for a rack and pinion they took around 1 month. At least with the mas they don't have that many cars to deal with all the time at the dealer

Anyways we'll talk more about all this wed night when i get to vegas haha.

Off the top of my head:

When we first took delivery it was in and out of the shop with transmission problems (my mom was stranded on I-5 in rush hour with a burnt out clutch) until they finally just put in a whole new transmission.

Then the brake peddle was sticking, it took us forever to figure out why the car always smelt like burnt brakes.

Driver's door internal cable snapped so that the drivers door couldn't be opened from the inside (went 2 weeks of rolling down window to reach out to open the door before we had a chance to get it in)

    Handbreak broke

But mostly we just the the dashboard error "Go to dealer" a lot.... I can't tell you how many times the thing has been flat bedded away. What pisses off my dad the most is the F/M service here in SD is such a pain, you have to call them several times before they call you back for minor issues. Plus, they NEVER give a rental car so it's a pain when it's in the shop.

The last straw with it was just last weekend when I was home the car was finished getting the drivers door fixed and it was Friday afternoon so we had to go get it or wait until Monday. We were to busy to go pick it up so we wanted them to deliver it (as they have several times before) but they only had one free mechanic. Basically the mechanic drove the car to our house and I personally had to drive him back to the shop.

I got my parents on the wait list for the car when I saw the first pictures of it so we got one of the first few QP's ever delivered to San Diego, the 2006's and 2007's are better thanks them figuring out lots of the bugs with our nightmares. It's tough to want to get rid of it though since we specked every option and personalized all the interior colors, and it is SUCH a good looking car, but no way will we deal with it when the warranty is up.

i couldn't tell you much more about how often they break, and unfortunately i don't know many owners personally.
however, if you find one here in st louis, i would be more than happy to go look at it personally, even though i can't stand going to look at real fancy cars, but i'll bite the bullet on this one, :D

I have an Arnage and its now 7 years old (its a 2000) that I bought in 2002 with 6k miles and it hasn't given me any trouble at all. Zero, nada, zilch. Granted it only has 20k miles on it at this point so it isn't exactly a work horse but if I could ever sell it (not the easiest car to sell used by the way, come on Roy, move that thing!) I would consider replacing it with a newer version T in a heartbeat. I also have an 07 Continental GTC so I am totally familiar with the Flying Spur and while on paper it is a better car in pretty much every category than the Arnage is, you just don't get that same "feeling" while driving it. Kind of like the new S class which again is way more advanced than an Arnage but lets talk style, class and the overall feeling it gives you while you tool down the road. Everone is after something different when it comes to a car purchase so I can't speak as to what you are looking for but I can tell you the maintenence nightmare stuff you hear is just hearsay. I am sure as any other car there are lemons and when you check service history, if the car has been in the shop 20 times in 4k miles you avoid it. Arnages can be bought for great deals even at authorized dealers and you can always work in the extended warranty.

VW took over much earlier. The 2001 was also the first year of the 'VW' Bentley, not 2002.

The 99 was the only green label which is generally regarded as the one to stay away from. the 2000 on are basically the same car with minor changes through the line and the T came in 2002.

Interesting. All my Bentley material tell me they were from MY 1999 to 2000, with 2001 being the change over. So I take it you have the 6.75L V8?

No rental car? That's nuts. If your parents are spending that kind of coin for a new Maserati, that's inexcusable service. My Mercedes dealer picked my car up at my house and brought me a loaner C-Class.

I have a 'Don't bother the dealer' light in the 328.

    Also:

    brake 'pedal'
    'handbrake'

I was an eighth grade spelling champion. Trust me. ;)

Yes, that would be the simplest choice because we truly LOVE the QP, we are just convinced we have a lemon of some kind because we have several friends with newer QP's that have had no problems.

However, dealing with the F/M of San Diego service has been such a nightmare that my dad just doesn't want to deal with them anymore. Our goal this summer is to sell the 360 Spider and the QP at the same time and pick up an Arnage and a Gallardo Spyder.

They don't have any. My dad is retired so he doesn't commute anywhere. All the driving they do is to the golf club and restaurants. Only now and then do they drive up to LA or Palm Desert. They have been using the Vons Online for grocery deliveries, and if they really need to run some errands, they take my sisters RX330 Lexus SUV. Their neighborhood is kind of all inclusive, the golf club is right in the "compound" and they either eat there or get take-out from there almost everyday.
